I swear I'll catch up. And that plot will happen eventually, though not here, lol.

(Tumblr tags: #jyn: his hair is VERY ANNOYING that's why i want to touch it #this makes perfect sense #later: *jyn comes out with bare shoulder muscles and loose hair* #so about princess leia #cassian: who)

(This is a serious fic on a serious blog.)

title: per ardua ad astra (9/?)
verse: Death Star
characters: Jyn Erso, Cassian Andor; in absentia, Bail Organa, Mon Mothma, Padmé Amidala, Leia Organa; repressed but very definite Jyn/Cassian
stuff that happens: Jyn tells Cassian about their new destination, and they speculate about the reasons and possible consequences; Cassian explains his background with Leia, and the seeds of the Rebellion for Alderaan.
previous chapters: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight

“She tried to kill the director who took my father.” Jyn’s lip curled. “Krennic. You met him.”

He lifted a brow. “I did?”

“Well,” she said, “you shot him. In the Citadel.”

“Ah.” Cassian considered that, then met her eyes again with a slight smile. “Good.”

Smiling back, Jyn felt less gratitude than fierce satisfaction. “Good.”

anghraine: jyn erso during the jedha mission (shoulders up) (jyn [jedha])
orrr I'm trying to write Ch 11 of ad astra, so maybe I'll stop polishing up the *squints* eighth chapter.

title: per ardua ad astra (8/?)
verse: Death Star
characters: Bodhi Rook, Cassian Andor, Jyn Erso; Bain Efrah, Quartermaster Brakas; hints of Jyn/Cassian
stuff that happens: Bodhi gets a crash course in Assets 101; Efrah offers orientation services to Lyr and meets Willix; Cassian orders the requisitions Jyn missed; Jyn stresses over Leia, Wiki-hops from Alderaan to Vaesda, and hears an inevitable revelation.
previous chapters: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven

Efrah cast a quick glance at her, unreadable except a very slight, very knowing smile.

“Well, now I can see why you’d stick around that deathtrap for your captain.

“Oh?” Her fingers tingled. Puzzled for a moment, Jyn realized she was gripping her datapad so tightly that she’d cut off blood from her fingertips. She forced herself to relax her grip.

Very solemnly, Efrah said, “His cheekbones would be a great loss to the galaxy. You’re a true hero, Lyr.”

Jyn snorted. “Just doing my part for the Empire.”

...who does not appear in this chapter, except in spirit. I like to imagine that he represents/spawns a strain of reason among certain contingents, though.

Unrelatedly, this chapter was really the first to provoke the apparently inevitable "well, in the EU" preaching. If you knew me in the lj days, I'm sure you can imagine how low my tolerance has ground at this point, so I might have been a bit brusque. But most people were nice and thoughtful—Rogue One fandom is probably my favourite of the SW subfandoms, now that the Migratory Discourse Fandom has mostly abandoned us.

title: per ardua ad astra (7/?)
verse: Death Star
characters: Jyn Erso, Bodhi Rook, and (very briefly) Cassian Andor; OCs—Bain Efrah, Mihal Zekheret; Jyn/Cassian (muddled What Are These Feelings + Inexplicable Preoccupation flavour; it's mostly focused on Jyn's undercover adventures).
stuff that happens: Jyn pseudo-bonds with the two Imperial NCOs she met earlier, particularly the hard-harded Efrah; she finds a way, though not the obvious one, to blame Cassian for her disinterest in flirtation; Zekheret and Efrah drop some ANH bombshells; not all Imperials approve of current tactics; Bodhi staves off nervous breakdown.
previous chapters: one, two, three, four, five, six

Hard to figure out what a woman like Efrah would see in an amiable ass like Zekheret, but then, she’d never had much success figuring out what other people ever saw in each other.

Not that she’d much bothered herself over it. And she didn’t want to bother herself with Efrah and Zekheret’s relationship, either, despite the flicker of curiosity. She didn’t want to know them, or anyone. Even at the best of times. Certainly, these were far from those. Soon, she or they would be dead, and it’d be good riddance for whoever lived. Hell, they’d kill her in a moment if they knew who she was. No point in cozying up for that, except—

Except she needed information.

anghraine: cassian andor and jyn erso exchanging a glance (cassian and jyn)
It's the small joys!

And here's another chapter. On Tumblr, I just said "I'm so glad everyone is reading this for domesticity, emotional ineptitude, and EU-ignoring headcanons"—I genuinely thought those might be problems, LOL. Instead, it ended up getting a lot more notes than all but the first, so apparently not. I was genuinely puzzled at first, but it is longer and shippier than usual. (Blankets and touching!)

title: per ardua ad astra (6/?)
verse: Death Star
characters: Jyn Erso, Cassian Andor; Jyn/Cassian (for real! awkward-can't-express-feelings Jyn/Cassian, but nevertheless)
stuff that happens: BACKSTORY HOUR starring Quadruple Agent Cassein Willix and Princess Senator Spy Leia Organa; Jyn gets professional advice; Cassian's neatnik paranoia is not to be stopped by mere broken bones; bonding through geological facts; Jyn behaves very well under very unfair pressures.
previous chapters: one, two, three, four, five

When she murmured I’m not used to people sticking around when things go bad to Cassian, she meant it for him, thanks and explanation and apology rolled up together. As near as she got to any of them. He had to know that. He did know—he’d tilted towards her as she spoke, leaned in to listen and to promise, their steps falling into sync from opposite directions. She never saw him do the same thing with anyone else, not with his soldiers, not Bodhi, not Kay. It wasn’t Captain Andor who told her welcome home.

Jyn still didn’t know exactly what Cassian meant. She wasn’t sure Cassian knew what he meant. But it had something to do with the fact that they stood in the Death Star, Jyn all but twitching with nerves while Cassian concealed what must be agony, and they felt something like safe.

But I'm woefully behind on everything over here. :\

title: per ardua ad astra (5/?)
verse: Death Star
characters: Jyn Erso, Cassian Andor; some nameless OCs, but they're transitory—this chapter is definitely the Jyn and Cassian show (FINALLY)
stuff that happens: Jyn and Cassian discreetly catch up, for a Jyn and Cassian value of discreet. Also, it turns out that it takes a really long time to get around a base the size of a moon, and feels still longer when one of you has broken ribs.
previous chapters: one, two, three, four

He looked less pinched but also more exhausted; he hadn’t buttoned the jacket at all. Silently, she pointed at the bed.

With Cassian, she didn’t have to worry about some pathetic attempt at flirtation. He nodded, walked over, propped up the pillow, and carefully laid himself down. Then he said,

“What is Darth Vader doing here?”

Pathetic flirtation might have been better.

title: per ardua ad astra (4/?)
verse: Death Star
characters: Jyn Erso, Bodhi Rook, Cassian Andor; OCs—Dr Esten, Corporal Zekheret, Sergeant Bain Efrah, various nameless Imperials
stuff that happens: Jyn doesn't like spying, news at eleven; Bodhi gets news from the stormtrooper grapevine; release of How To Annoy Xenophobes, a book by Cassian Andor
previous chapters: one, two, three

To her annoyance, he mentioned nothing of substance beyond his opinion that things would be better with Governor Tarkin running the Death Star.

“Can’t be worse than Krennic,” said a sergeant across from them, one of the only female ones Jyn had yet seen. “Backwater creep who thinks he’s better than the people doing the real work. I saw him flouncing around in that cape once, like he’s Darth fucking Vader. Ugh. It’ll be just our luck if he made it off. I bet he has.”

Jyn felt an unexpected glow of benevolence. Cheerfully, she said, “No, he didn’t. Some Rebel shot him in the back.”

title: per ardua ad astra (3/?)
verse: Death Star
characters: Jyn Erso and Bodhi Rook; Cassian Andor, technically; OCs—Corporal Pralit, Dr Esten
stuff that happens: Even on the Death Star, Jyn gets to appreciate the small joys of life: running water, quality health care, and local news.
previous chapters: one, two

She felt faintly soiled. More than faintly. Did it feel the same to Cassian?

Everything I did, I did for the Rebellion. Not the words of a man who enjoyed the choices he made. Not even the words of a man who believed them right, except as necessary sacrifices for a greater moral end. Perhaps he hated this near as much as Jyn. But Cassian had the cause to live by, even his darkest paths lit by that clear, shining purpose. Jyn—she didn’t quite know what she had, even if she managed to claw their way out of this place. She believed, she hoped, she cared about the fight. She did now. And she wouldn’t give up, ever. She just … she couldn’t see herself existing in Cassian’s stark simplicities, everything bleak or brilliant.

In any case, she felt as if she walked backwards, back to Lianna. None of this for the cause, for some great end, just survival. But not hers alone, she reminded herself. Cassian’s and Bodhi’s. They needed her. That was a cause in itself.

title: per ardua ad astra (2/?)

characters: Jyn Erso, Cassian Andor, Bodhi Rook; OCs—a nameless lieutenant, a nameless medic, a nameless ensign, and Quartermaster Brakas
stuff that happens: Jyn tries to survive talking to people, in the most literal sense possible
previous chapters: one

Bastards, she still thought. Cassian had better be grateful.

Then she felt sick, mind alight with the memory of his blood on her hands, on his mouth. She hadn’t forgotten. But just for a moment, Cassian had meant the cool-headed spy, somewhere out there glowering at the unworthy, not the man who carved up his own body getting to her.

Soon, she promised herself. He’d be himself again, preaching about the cause, and she, well, she’d figure out what she was. Maybe a Rebel. Definitely free.

I keep promising myself that I won't—I even managed to hold to it for, like, eight whole months! But I love Rogue One so much. SO. MUCH.

I was idly thinking of shippy AUs but nothing except "well they need to kiss" came to mind, lol, when a terrible and wonderful realization settled on me about the potential disaster that surviving above Scarif could really be. I wrote up a babbling post about it on Tumblr, mapped out an eleven-page outline, and the post started accumulating enough notes that I got anxious that someone else might write it first. (Clearly the best motivation for writing.)

ANYWAY. THIS IS WHAT I'M DOING NOW. (Also working on Lucy, the clear winner of the poll, but ... AHHHHH ROGUE ONE)

title: per ardua ad astra (aka I couldn't think of a title and went for maximum pretension)

verse: Death Star AU! The reason for the name will become evident by the end of the chapter. (There's considerable overlap with the Rogue One backstory of the Lucyverse, but the AUs themselves are completely independent.)

fandom: Star Wars

characters: Jyn Erso, Cassian Andor, Bodhi Rook; later, Leia Organa, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo; Jyn/Cassian

length: 4900 words (this chapter; God knows what it’ll be eventually)

stuff that happens: Jyn, Cassian, and Bodhi survive, only to face the worst bonus mission ever.

“Jyn, we have to leave now,” Bodhi was shouting.

She wasted no more time, just climbed over the railing, ignoring the twinges in her leg. They were about to be worse, but she could see Cassian near-collapsed over Bodhi. She’d live. Hopefully.

Jyn jumped.
