Aragorn/Faramir headcanons
How I generally envision it going:
- Aragorn knows the reasons for Faramir’s collapse right off the bat because Imrahil told him what went down over the last few days.
- …But there’s also some element of *waves hand* supernatural whatsit.
- Aragorn does enter a spiritual shadow realm to find Faramir in the mystical healing thing.
- Aragorn is genuinely unsure how Faramir will respond to his arrival and claim until F wakes and acknowledges him, but is determined to heal him anyway; Faramir is genuinely unsure how Aragorn will deal with the Stewardship, but is determined to support him in whatever form he can.
- They’re immediately impressed by each other (pretty much canon, but … very impressed), as Steward/king, full-throttle Númenóreans, and just … people.
- At first, Faramir is vaguely deferential on a day-to-day basis, as he thinks appropriate before a Númenórean head of state (per JRRT’s letter); although Aragorn receives and expects a certain level of deference as king, it inexplicably makes him uncomfortable from F.
- Beneath his manner, Faramir turns out to be sternly uncompromising when his mind is set, and he’s steely and decisive in his capacity as chief advisor. It’s a (just as inexplicable) enormous relief to A.
- Faramir is in love with Aragorn from the first, though he’s able to hide it beneath his role as dedicated advisor. Aragorn deeply cares about him from the first without a whole lot of reason, which he doesn’t think about very hard, but only gradually realizes that he actually loves him.
- It’s not an easy realization, given that a) they work closely together as king and Steward and b) Faramir is Denethor’s son.
- what I’m saying here is mutual pining
- super-charged mutual pining, because they could actually share thoughts via Númenórean powers and instead are deliberately closing each other out, which is a little sad for both of them, but not something they can really talk about.
- Gimli and Legolas, who live in the Ithilien colony and frequently visit Minas Tirith, are 100% aware of the mutual pining and think it’s simultaneously hilarious and tragic.
- It’s Aragorn who eventually shrugs off caution, kisses him, and throws open the closed doors in his mind.
- Faramir: !!!!!
