I'm honestly kind of surprised by that response, though—the specific instances I'm referring to are all pretty recent, but in general the massive impact of the films down to small details, the sway of popular fanons based on minor details or just some BNF's headcanon, and the stampede to find some woman to blame for men's choices in the Silmarillion have been deeply embedded in Tolkien fan spaces for a long time IMO. Not all Tolkien fan spaces, for sure, but it's hard to escape in the Tumblr/AO3/Silm-focused side of fandom.
