2010 Fic Review

I'm late, as usual, but it's never too late to meme.

First Impressions. P&P AU (genderswap). When Henry Bennet, only son and heir to an eccentric country squire, crosses paths with Catherine Darcy of Pemberley, she publicly insults him and runs interference in his sister's romance. Naturally, proposals, matchmaking messes, an elopement, an abundance of mixed signals, and massive misunderstandings ensue. (Darcy/Elizabeth [Catherine/Henry], 36,463 words, 26 June 2010)
-- Ten Facts About Henry and Catherine Darcy. P&P AU (genderswap). Exactly what it says on the tin. (Darcy/Elizabeth [Catherine/Henry], 903 words, 1 July 2010)

Ten Facts About Altair Lestrange. P&P AU (fusion with HP). Ten facts about Darcy, in a reality where P&P takes place in the Potterverse. (Darcy/Elizabeth [Altair/Elizabeth]: also Charlotte Lucas, Colonel Fitzwilliam [Auror Leo Black], Charles Bingley, Sir Lewis de Bourgh [Headmaster Lucius Rosier], Lady Anne Darcy [Madam Andromeda Lestrange], Lady Catherine de Bourgh [Madam Cassiopeia Rosier], 390 words, 1 July 2010)

Ten Facts About Pride and Prejudice. P&P, P&P AU (fusion with SW, DW and Superman). Ten serious facts about Elizabeth, ten cracky ones about Darcy. (Darcy/Elizabeth [technically -- it's more gen], 949 words, 22 July 2010)

Star Wars

Ten Facts About Star Wars. PT/OT AU (slight alternate canon). Anakin Skywalker is redeemed within months of his fall. (Ultragen: Anakin Skywalker, Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, and Obi-Wan Kenobi, 9,413 words, 31 August 2010)

Legacy. OT sequel (slightly alternate canon for ROTJ, complete reimagining of PT). Luke, Leia and Han are plucky backstory detectives. (Gen: Han Solo, Leia Organa, Luke Skywalker, WIP [821 words], 10 Sep 2010)

Strange Bedfellows
. PT AU (reimagining).  The Emperor is dead.  (Gen: Palpatine and Padmé Amidala, WIP [413 words], 17 Sep 2010)

Five Reveals That Never Happened.  OT AU(s).  Five backstories that could have been the original trilogy's Big Reveals, but ... weren't. (Gen: Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Leia Organa, 932 words, 1 Nov 2010)

Eleven Things Anakin Skywalker Said To His Son.  PT AU (reimagining), OT, post-OT.  Drabble: exactly what it says.  (Gen: Anakin Skywalker and Luke Skywalker, 147 words, 17 Nov 2010)

Ten Facts About Harry Potter. PS/SS AU (PTGverse). Harry is sorted into Slytherin. (Gen: Harry Potter, Minerva McGonagall, Severus Snape, Cassiopeia Black, others, 802 words, 1 July 2010.)

Hmm, not quite as unproductive as I thought.

Questions (gacked from [personal profile] holdouttrout )

My favourite story of the year:

First Impressions, because it's the first thing in years that I've really enjoyed writing, and felt satisfied with afterward.  Also, genderswap! Girl!Darcy! (It's probably obvious, but OMG CATHERINE DARCY I LOVE YOU FOREVER.)

My best story this year:

Ditto.  It was the result of almost two years' worth of planning, hele and tree and Lin and everyone helped me work out the kinks, I loved writing it even when I was pulling my hair out (CATHERINE NO, STOP TALKING GAAAAAAH), and I think it shows.  And it makes me so very, very happy that it's far and away my most popular story on AO3, and SC is barely a blip on the radar.

Story most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion:

Eh. Strange Bedfellows, I guess, but that's my fault for not finishing it.  And for the whole 'completely reimagining the canon' thing, which I expect turns people off.  (Those who share my undying hatred for the prequel trilogy probably wouldn't be reading PT fic, and those who don't probably wouldn't be reading PT fic that gleefully rearranges canon.)

Story I wrote that I never thought I'd write.

First Impressions!  I'd be tinkering with the idea for months on end and never figured I'd do more than the snippets I tormented [personal profile] hl  with, since it was such an epic undertaking and I have so (very, very) many WIPs already.  But she provided an excuse convinced me to do it for au_bigbang, and six months later I had a completed novella on my hands.

Most fun story

Ten Facts About Fitzwilliam Darcy.  Fandom's insistence that Darcy is the ULTIMATE HERO OF EVERYTHING ALWAYS (even if makes no sense for his character!) possessed my brain somehow, and my Very Serious fic became DARCY IS CHUCK NORRIS AND SUPERMAN AND DARTH VADER AND A TIME LORD AND OH YEAH JANE AUSTEN.

Sexiest story

Uh. I think First Impressions wins by default, just because it actually has sex in it.  Well, UST.

Hardest story to write

On Kinship.  Yes, the drabble.  They were 144 words from hell.  Of course, that's because I was trying to navigate between the Scylla and Charybdis of Stupidity and Fail.  I think ANH makes it blatantly obvious that, as far as Owen and Beru were concerned, Luke had ANAKIN'S SON all but carved across his forehead.  At the same time, I hate the character bashing we often see.  I also dislike the constant assumption that Beru must have been barren (because if you don't have children, it means you can't!).  As a licensed foster parent, I also also dislike the conflation of fostering and adoption, and as an aunt, I also also also dislike the portrayal of all adult-child relationships as mentorship or surrogate parenthood.

So I was trying to address all of that.  In one hundred-some words.  While staying in-character.

Gah.

Easiest story to write

Once Upon A Time.  SW in a fantasy universe seemed fun and cool and potentially complicated, so I was happily coming up with equivalencies when I had the idea to mix it with a full-universe genderswap.  Lucy Skywalker the noble, adventurous young heroine!  Hana the jaded pirate! The Empress!  Anna Skywalker, paladin and war hero who went evil, fought her mentor while eight months pregnant, lost three limbs and was left to burn to death, got rescued just in time to give birth, lost her baby anyway and helped forge the Empire. In. One. Day.  I was so completely thrilled that I wrote the verse's first five or six drabbles in ... forty minutes, I think.  Easiest fics ever.

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?

Hm.  More, I think, because I nobly intended to work on my WIPs and ... didn't.  At all, actually.  *wince*  I wrote less in sheer quantity, though, because I was so fried from First Impressions that I couldn't bring myself to work on anything requiring real commitment.  The only substantial thing I wrote besides that was my weird 10 Facts SW AU fic.

Did you take any writing risks this year?  What did you learn from them?

Hell yes.  I did a bigbang!  Um ... I can finish things!  Really!  If I have a very very thorough outline, have thought almost everything out ahead of time, don't work on anything else and work to a deadline that has a REALLY COOL REWARD on the other end of it.

Do you have any goals for the New Year?

Finish some of those WIPs.  But not Subsequent Connections.
