unpopular opinion time + memes

Finished Ch 7 of Revenge, aka the Department of Backstory - it's really solidified this as equally a PT AU/alternate canon story. Anyway, time for my unpopular opinion of the day, on family resemblance among the Skywalkers.

(This isn't really meta. Just: "here is what I think, with no real explanation why. Maybe later when I have more time to go into it.")

Luke and Leia are fundamentally very similar people. That is, hot-tempered (but clever, resourceful, intensely driven) idealists with a streak of kickass a mile wide, accompanied by an incongruous capacity for iron self-control and uncanny insight. They're just not identical people (e.g., Leia is more aggressive and abrasive, Luke is milder and sneakier), and since they're twins, not identical = polar opposites.

Unpopular opinion 1a) In general, they both take after their father, mostly in the same ways.
Unpopular opinion 1b) They do take after their mother too, but not as much, and mostly in different ways.
(Really) unpopular opinion 1c) Leia does so more than Luke - especially when it comes to matters of personal loyalty and self-awareness.

And now, on to the memes!

Star Wars meme

(8) Post a video of your favourite part of your favourite movie of the saga.

Heh, this one's really a challenge.

Best reveal ever.

Asexuality meme

(8) Do you think there should be asexual pride? What do you think it should be like?

I ... guess so. Mostly, I think we need resources, since LGBT communities often aren't safe for us. More meatspace support networks and major gatherings and such, outside of AVEN. Otherwise, I don't really know.

Fanfic meme

Day 8: Do you write OCs? And if so, what do you do to make certain they're not Mary Sues, and if not, explain your thoughts on OCs.

Yes. All the time! I mostly do the same thing I do with all my characters, since I think canon characters can be Sued just as easily as original ones, and often are. My main criterion is this: the character's narrative role has to be commensurate with their actual importance in the universe. No matter how beautiful or powerful or perfect a character is, if you keep them in their proper narrative place, they probably won't be a Sue (this is why Faramir is not a Sue and Bella Swan is, even though he's the next thing to practically perfect in every way, and she's deeply flawed at best). I don't think there are traits that create a Mary Sue so much as there are traits that, when seen together, provide a decent diagnostic criteria for Mary Sueitis.

I ... might have written an entire post about it here.

So if I'm unsure, I might run a character through this litmus test, which I like. I hear a lot of complaints about the ridiculously prescriptive requirements of these litmus tests, but this one seems quite fair. (By which I mean, of course, that none of my OCs have scored as anything more than "not a Sue, but leaning in that direction.")
