Mark(s) + Day 21

So, I'm a huge fan of Mark Does Stuff.  Shocking, I know.

Okay, except for his Sherlock reviews, and that's only because "not interested in relationships = gay!" thing makes me ... annoyed.  Sherlock is one of the only characters that the actor and to some degree the writers have explicitly identified as asexual.  Do you know how many of those we have?  Yeah, like two.  It's one thing to see characters I personally interpret as ace portrayed (either in fic or meta) as sexual or even hypersexual.  Irritating, but when they're all but explicitly asexual, it crosses over into -- extreme discomfort.

Like: They gave us an eccentric, self-identified sociopath, and you won't even let us have that.  You don't even notice it.  I've come to just expect that from most people, but you, Mark, you're better than that.  Aren't you?  In his defence, he did at least twig on to the mere possibility in the third episode.

Anyway, thus far he's always been doing something I'm familiar with (or two things!), so I can follow along.  Now, though, he's doing The Book Thief on one hand (blah) and Avatar: The Last Airbender on the other.  I knew vaguely that pretty much everybody on the Internet loves A:TLA, hence the preponderance of A:TLA-icons-for-everything.  Other than that, my knowledge could be summed up by the following:

(1) There's a guy named Zuko who's really, really popular.  He has a seriously crazypants sister.
(2) His girlfriend Mai is hated by lots and lots of people, many of whom wanted him to instead end up with a girl named Katara.
(3) The main character is an airbender named Aang.  Presumably he's the last one.
(4) The Big Bad is an evil Fire Lord.  He's voiced by Mark Hamill, who is only one of my favourite actors ever.

Sherlock notwithstanding, I couldn't resist both of my favourite Marks in the universe, so I went ahead and watched it.

It is every bit as amazing as everybody said.  My thoughts are mostly just KEYSMASH and joy and endless sadface.  And, holy shit, if they say the scene where Ozai burns Zuko isn't an allusion to SW they're lying it totally is.  Zuko --> "I won't fight you!" --> "I won't fight you, Father!" --> Luke --> Mark Hamill --> Ozai --> wait, my brain.  Also, for some reason I always vaguely disliked Ron, even in my previous life as a GBHWF shipper, but I love Sokka.  Not as much as Katara and Zuko, though.  I seriously love them, though I don't get shipping them.

Aang is adorable and wonderful and amazing.  Also, Azula OMG OMG OMG.  And Iroh!  Iroh/tea = OTP!  And Ursa!  And Ozai.  Could he be more creepy?  (Well, Azula.  But I have this weird sympathy for her, while Ozai is just monstrous.) I don't know why I have this weak spot for horrifically evil people, male and female alike.  But OZAI.

(It provides me endless amusement to imagine that Luke Skywalker ends up sounding just like Fire Lord Ozai.  I bet the little Jedi apprentices spend their first week trying not to faint every time he opens his mouth.  *glee*)

THIS.

Day 21:  Who is your favourite female character screwed over by canon?

I don't think I like many characters screwed over by canon.  I can't think this is going to be a new one -- yeah, it's got to be Leia or Donna.  Okay, definitely Donna.

Her end is still rage-inducing.  It was her life.  If she preferred death over the alternative, it was her choice.  No, they couldn't let her just choose to go be awesome on her own.  She had to be mind-raped.  Yes, something something technobabble something, but these are constructed stories and constructed characters.  It happened because the writers made it happen.  And I don't know if they could have made her more obviously unwilling if they'd tried.  Even with full knowledge of the consequences, she still begged him not to.  A;JAD;AJ;DA;KAD;JDA;KLJA;LKJFDA;LJKAFD;LKJD.

But Donna herself is still amazing.  I just hate what was done to her.
