Tumblr crosspost (11 June 2020)
Generally speaking, I prefer to keep my fics to some direct relationship with canon—retellings, what-ifs, “canon except my ship happens,” close fusions, 1-2 (and only 1-2) characters are genderbent, actually canon-compliant, etc etc. I have some that are pretty far out there, but I end up losing interest when they wander too far off, since it’s just original fic at that point and I have original fic.
Buuuuut
There’s been a P&P/Avatar crossover in my head for years where it’s just kind of plopping the P&P characters into the Avatarverse, and P&P does basically wind out, but also there’s this completely ?????????? plot where one of the little Gardiner kids is the new Avatar and the previous Avatar was Darcy’s mother, who got murdered in some scheme orchestrated by Mrs Wickham (who was eeeevil) and an OC aristocrat (even more eeeeeeevil), but deliberately died outside of the Avatar State.
Select members of the Bennet-Gardiner family know that Tiny Gardiner is the new Avatar but they’re keeping it a secret because some organization (led either by Evil Aristocrat or some associate) is hunting her down and they don’t know who they can trust.
Most of this happens in the Earth Kingdom, where the Bennets have a small estate and the Darcys a large one (the Gardiners live in Ba Sing Se and Tiny Gardiner is the Earth Avatar in the cycle). Mr Bennet, Elizabeth, and unexpectedly, Lydia, are earthbenders. So is Wickham, who was mentored by Darcy’s father, one of the greatest earthbenders living; they had a special bond deepened by the fact that both Darcy and Georgiana are waterbenders, taking after their mother’s family in the Northern Water Tribe.
I’ve played out different scenarios in my head, but in the main one, Darcy and Elizabeth’s relationship mostly plays out along class lines à la the novel; he doesn’t know about Tiny Gardiner and she doesn’t know that his mother was the Water Tribe’s Avatar. He finds out during Lydia’s disaster, when he’s waiting to see Mr Gardiner and just happens to see Tiny Gardiner bend two elements, but he has the sense to keep it to himself until the big fight at the end.
The main alternate version is one where the Gardiners’ visit to Longbourn overlaps with the Bingleys’ and Darcy’s time at Netherfield, and also the Gardiner children are with them. And Tiny Gardiner wanders off just as the Secret Avatar Killing Organization tracks her down, and by sheer chance Darcy happens by mere moments before the attack, and ends up defending her bc, uh, a bunch of adults are attacking a child, wtf, and that’s when he discovers his intimidating aristocratic mother has been reborn as a merchant’s shy daughter and starts re-evaluating.
Other things:
- The Gardiners, Elizabeth, and Jane know that Tiny Gardiner is the Avatar; Mr Bennet suspects; none of the others have the least idea
- Elizabeth guessed that Darcy was a bender all along, but (knowing nothing of his family history) assumed he was an airbender (her opposite!) for a really long time
- Wickham is a shitheel, but no worse; he’s not involved in the greater Avatar plot, though he knows what his mother did and is vaguely uncomfortable about it
- The Bingleys are all non-benders and missed a lot of this until the Big Showdown when suddenly Elizabeth is hurling boulders
- There was a previous Big Showdown after Lady Anne’s murder; the murder didn’t quite go according to plan, and then the Fitzwilliams showed up demanding explanations and finally there was this all-out battle at Pemberley which they thought ended the conspiracy, but the other conspirators were merely biding their time until they could track down the new Avatar as a child
- I never came up with names for any of the characters and will almost certainly never write a word of any of this
