Cecilia was one of the examples I was going to cite, yeah. Also you might want to look at the Fox-Strangways. The details of how they came about the hyphenated name escape me at the moment, but I know it had something to do with inheritance. An Open Elite?* by Lawrence Stone talks about the practice for at least a few pages.

*Not a book I generally recommend since I don't really agree with it's main thesis statement, but in this case it might be worth looking at.
