I'm glad it's arrived after a very weird summer. I'm doing a bunch of things with my mother and my housemate Ash (it's my mother's birthday and she suggested a "girl's day out" with us), trying to keep up with academia, etc. I stuck a bunch of posts I wanted to either make or respond to in my Tumblr drafts (the drafts folder is now at 845 lol), and am hoping I'll find the time to better organize my tags over here, so I'm not constantly running into my 2000 tag maximum. And I need to do a lot of grading. And I want to actually play the final version of BG3, now that Patch 7 is out and I've got mods working the way I want. And I want to revise my novel ... someday I'll find the time!

In any case, happy birthday to Jimmy Carter as well! I'm really glad he made it to 100 and hope he manages to fulfill his plan to vote for Harris/Walz.

I got BG3 updated on my main computer and checked the patch notes. Despite my Alfira-shaped trauma from my very abortive Dark Urge attempt, I laughed at this:

I was playing Guild Wars with my mother, and she was deeply impressed that my legendary defender of Ascalon Mesmer managed to survive a tough battle despite being a fragile spellcaster left to fight alone after everyone else died.

Mother: She’s such a good character!

Me: Thanks!

Dad: Well … she is a legendary defender of Ascalon, after all.

Me: :D :D :D

Original guild wars was such a good game

Yes! I love GW2, but I have a particularly soft spot in my heart for the original and still really enjoy playing it. The skill system can be a bit overwhelming, but it’s fun to have that much freedom + individualized instances and hero companions and everything. Also, Mesmer is my favorite class, so fabulous costumes, too :D :D :D

The game is 15 years old, so I wouldn’t assume anyone cares, but the Legendary Defender of Ascalon title I just got requires that you reach the maximum level for the entire game (20) in the tutorial zone, in which the highest level creature for most of the zones is level 5, and in any zone is four level 10 bosses.

You can get quests that spawn higher level creatures, but only at level 10, and only once a day. Also, they only scale up every few levels. I’ve been intermittently working on it for months and didn’t even try for years, since I’m honestly not very good at games, though I love them.

So getting it at last is pretty exciting for me :D

In honor of finally!!! getting the Legendary Defender of Ascalon title after fiFTEEN YEARS, a thing for my favorite location in any video game ever: pre-Searing Ascalon from Guild Wars: Prophecies.

Never forgive, never forget.

Since the Elon purchase, I've avoided using Twitter as much as possible. But I only just discovered (via Tumblr, obviously) Violet McVinnie's tradition of making "kiss and make up" videos for games she worked on at BioWare, which includes an absolute delight/horror of one for Mass Effect 3. I might have resisted the impulse to click it weren't Mass Effect, but it ... was, and then it was such absolute gold that I feel the need to also share it here.

If you lack inner fortitude like me, you will absolutely not regret clicking the video, or alternatively will regret it very much.

If you possess the strength to resist, I salute you.

I haven’t villain blogged for awhile, but I remain myself. My group’s Discord chat is like:

I know it’s a 15-y-o game that most people don’t care about any more, but I am so close to getting Legendary Defender of Ascalon in Prophecies for the first time ever. !!!!!

My dad has been complaining about Guild Wars 2 not being the original Guild Wars for … like, seven years, and in the course of a conversation about it, announced that he wants to get the new GW2 expansion for the whole family when it comes out.

me: I’d love it, but … ?

dad: I want to support ArenaNet.

me: ?????

dad: So that they keep running GW1!

me: …ah.

anghraine: the standard art of female commander shepard from mass effect (an armored soldier with red hair and pale skin) (shepard)
Okay, so I finally got the Mass Effect LE on sale just after my birthday this year, after my best friend and I had a blast playing two full runs on his old Playstation with his original discs (a noble, heroic Infilitrator!Shepard/Liara game and later, a tragic, somewhat edgier Vanguard!Shepard/Thane one). I haven't allowed myself to play it because of the diss etc, but my best friend and I needed to blow some time, so we got it up and running and figured we'd do the character customization for the Adept!Shepard I've been itching to try.

(My fantasy-loving brain is like "ahh, the full spellcaster, I have to try it out.")

Although Elizabeth in my percolating Mass Effect/P&P fusion is an Infiltrator while Darcy is an Adept, I suspect playing an Adept will get me more in that fun Shepard!Elizabeth/asari!Darcy frame of mind.

ANYWAY the point is that, holy shit, the Legendary Edition looks so beautiful on my computer. I thought the original held up pretty well considering, but this is going to be so cool once I can actually spare the time to play it!!!

Tangent: we were talking about how we'd make a homebrew spacefaring TTRPG, and I reminded him of a previous conversation about how we would TTRPG-ify Mass Effect to our specific preferences, and what kind of person we'd want to play.

me: I still want playable vorcha.
J: But you have to do the voice.
me: Oh, for sure. And playable hanar! A gun in every tentacle!!
J: No first-person, though, you get punished somehow if you don't say "this one."
me: Of course. Disadvantage every time you skip it.
J: What would you play, though?
me: Hmm, I'm not sure. I'd have to think about it. What about you?
J, after a moment's consideration: Honestly? I think I'd play a really, really old Ardat-Yakshi.
me: ...damn. Now that's a character concept.

Truly trivial complaints:

My birthday is coming up (the ides of March!!) and it’s a Significant Age, so people are like … you need to make a list so we have some idea of what to give you for the Significant Birthday!

Which is fair, but these days, the things I want are like … “my longtime best friend to live in the PNW again” and “my prelims to be over” and “a book cover for my perpetually unfinished novel” and “Amazon to do well by Númenor” and “a sudden desire to eat vegetables.”

I mean, there are plenty of things that occur to me in passing, but when it comes down to making a list, they all flee my mind and … ???

asfkjdk;fads I asked the DM about my character’s ancestral city, which her forebears were driven from several generations earlier, and he let me come up with all the details about the city in the past and present and its backstory, and said it was all cool and he would add it to his notes.

My grad school friends and I played our D&D session over Discord last night (irl we’ve scattered to the winds) and it was so fun!

I’ve always played clerics, but my aasimar celestial warlock is pretty cleric-y while doing a lot of different things (though RIP to my AC) and she got a visitation from her angelic patron. HELL(errrr) YEAH.

Also, she and my best grad school friend’s character rolled badly on a perception check for our watch while the others slept, so we decided we were just really into a conversation. So we played it all out with chatting about my character’s patron and our reservations about the kinda imperialist side we’re temporarily on the side of, given that both of our peoples were driven from their homes, and bonded over our separate but related histories.

And between that conversation and the one my character had with the angelic patron, our DM gave me inspiration! I’m terrible at RP, so this almost never happens, but I had a lot of fun with it last night! :D

It seems ridiculous, but—

I feel sort of accomplished by the fact that I:
  • got up at 8 AM
  • posted materials for my class
  • played a Guild Wars mission with my mother
  • drank tea
  • ate breakfast
  • answered a student email
  • posted instructions/announcements for the week in Blackboard
  • showered
  • brushed some of my hair
  • brushed all my teeth
  • took my medications (bipolar meds & asthma ones & supplements)
  • tried to return a call
There are other things that I not only need to do, but should have finished at absolute latest last week, and meanwhile, my brain is like “okay, but we brushed a mat out of our hair for the first time in six weeks”

Digging up the links to so many DW tags got me wondering what tags I've actually used more than any others over here. It will probably look different after I'm done cross-posting, and maybe I'll check again then. But as of right now, the evening of 29 April 2024, this is every tag I've used over 100 times since my first post on 19 July 2009—

A. Tags used over 500 times:

1. #site: tumblr

This is far and away my most commonly used tag (used 1739 times), mainly because I've been cross-posting old Tumblr posts to Dreamwidth for years now, but also because I use it for every post referring to basically anything going on at Tumblr as well as the cross-posts.

2. #fandom: star wars

This feels like the "real" #1 tag, used 668 times and beating out all other fandoms (and indeed, everything). I suspect this is partly because I got into SW after making my DW account, but at a time when journal fandom was still quite active, so one of my most intense periods of SW fannishness was based here (or synced with lj, so the content is here as well). And then when you add in SW cross-posts and "overflow" material from Tumblr once Disney SW got kicking, especially after Rogue One, it's enough for the SW tag to jump ahead of every other tag but the Tumblr one.

3. #genre: meta

I periodically whine about feeling like I'm perceived more as a meta writer than a fic writer, even though I care more about fic and derive far more joy from it ... but I've tagged 667 posts with the meta tag and far less with any fic-related tag. In fairness, I originally conceived as "meta" as basically any post talking about a canon or fandom that wasn't fic, no matter how abrupt, so things I wouldn't really describe as "meta" these days fell under the tag until pretty recently. Even so, I've posted a lot more serious meta than fic!

4. #fandom: austen

The only surprise here is that this one wasn't even higher. I've tagged 640 posts with it over the years, and if you've followed me on Tumblr for awhile, you know there's only more coming. I'm pretty sure it'll beat out SW in the end for sheer quantity.

5. #fandom: middle-earth

While the previous three tags are clustered pretty closely together, there's a jump from the 640 Austen posts to a mere 505 Tolkien posts. This is partly because a bunch of my Tolkien stuff never made it onto Dreamwidth (that is, it happened on sites that are now dead or on lj before Dreamwidth was ever founded, or much later, was posted over at Tumblr and much of it hasn't made its way back over here). It's still one of my biggest fandoms, obviously; SW, Austen, and Tolkien will probably always be the Big Three for me.
