Since the Elon purchase, I've avoided using Twitter as much as possible. But I only just discovered (via Tumblr, obviously) Violet McVinnie's tradition of making "kiss and make up" videos for games she worked on at BioWare, which includes an absolute delight/horror of one for Mass Effect 3. I might have resisted the impulse to click it weren't Mass Effect, but it ... was, and then it was such absolute gold that I feel the need to also share it here.

If you lack inner fortitude like me, you will absolutely not regret clicking the video, or alternatively will regret it very much.

If you possess the strength to resist, I salute you.

A friend of mine was talking about how it took her a long time after her PhD to enjoy reading again, and it was such a relief to hear, because everyone I know is super into their research, and I feel like I could gladly live five years without ever reading another book or article.

At the same time, she now enjoys reading again, so it’s kind of reassuring to think that maybe, someday, I Will Be What I Was.

Also, every time I see some apparently-cool sf/f story going around on Twitter, it’s like … I couldn’t properly read it right now, but I’m looking forwards to the day when I’ll actually want to. Someday, I will be free!

I reblogged a screenshot of an official Tweet from Senator Raphael Warnock (D-GA), which includes a photograph of him standing next to his senatorial office in the Capitol with his name by the door. In the Tweet, he remarks that he was being arrested by the Capitol police for nonviolent protest the previous time he was there, and this time they were just showing him to his office there.

Today’s Twitter fanfic discourse is … something.

[ETA 4/12/2024: lmao, I am almost certain this was in reference to one of RSB's periodic tantrums over it that percolated through SF/F Twitter circles and pissed a wide variety of people off. I think I actually caught wind of it via John Scalzi of all people, who was like "as the author of Fuzzy Nation, I can't judge fanfic writers."]

tbh i’m only doing short stories but i cannot believe it is worth it to get involved in SF/F twitter. nooooo.

I replied:

I’m much more of a novelist than a short story writer, and it’s like … ugh, fine. But the hellscape of SF/F Twitter is half the reason I neglect my account tbh (so it only has … like, 30 followers, lol).

colorwheels14 said (on Jan 15th):

I know other professors who are on twitter for academic presence and reasons… I am not. Because there is no way I’m interacting with strangers on twitter.

alishatheninth said (on Jan 18th):

Just tell us what it is when it’s out so we can buy it, please!

I replied:

Aww, thanks!

I don’t think most people are interested tbh, which is fine (my “Anghraine” self has always been mainly for fandom), but I’m a little leery about explicitly connecting my pro and fannish identities. I’m not putting a lot of effort into the separation, just trying to avoid having one lead directly to the other. So I probably won’t say directly. I might broadly hint, though :)

[ETA 4/10/2024: I'm only preserving this on general principle; the submission window it's referencing is long past, of course.]

I know at least a few of you followed me for that SF/F publishing list, which is extremely outdated at this point. However! I just saw (*sigh* on Twitter) that Diabolical Plots is currently open to submissions for January, and they have a pretty detailed list of what they’re looking for here.

I know I should build up a Twitter presence™ for my serious business author account, but also … I don’t want to.

(This is clearly flawless reasoning at all times!)

#in fairness part of it is because #i'm on the fence about whether my novel is ya or not #the characters are young (12-16) and it's in first person so that's very ... present #though they get older over the course of the series #but most people have thought the style is not very ya-ish #so idek if it's worthwhile to dip my toe into the boiling sulfur lake that is ya twitter #regardless i haven't even checked my account in like three months #anghraine babbles #emphasis on 'babbles' #tbh i'll probably just stick around on tumblr until it collapses into a white dwarf and then drag myself by my fingernails to twitter

[ETA 4/10/2024: lol, a more innocent time when it seemed assured that Twitter's heyday would outlast Tumblr! And while I have many objections to Tumblr's current management, Twitter is assuredly worse and more unusable in every way, sometimes to the point of horror and sometimes to the point of outright comedy. I actually had started using Twitter actively on my writing account, as it happens, but I refused to continue after the Elon purchase.]

I am very deeply tired of the posts about how no one is neurotypical actually, everyone is disabled if you think about it, mental disabilities are just poorly conceived associations of traits and you shouldn't limit yourself with a label, blah blah blah.

I get that some of this is spurred on by inaccurate generalizations and assumptions about neurotypical people from neurodivergent people who may not fully understand the variations and nuances of NT experience, or who are simply wrong about certain things, or whose venting is imprecise, etc. But some of this so patently arises out of a visceral resentment at not being centered in every form of disability discourse and advocacy, and refusal to countenance the idea that neurodivergent people a) exist as such and b) are marginalized in a way that many NT people are not.

Some of these posts/commentary are coming from other neurodivergent people with whom I simply disagree. But most that I have seen are pretty clearly written from the POV of someone who knows they would ordinarily be considered neurotypical and resents it in a birdsrightsactivist kind of way:

[A screenshot of a Tweet from the user ProBirdsRights, aka birdsrightsactivist, reading "I am feel uncomfortable when we are not about me?"]

Autism on any scale but the most severe (and that only sometimes) does not seem real to most of the people writing these posts, additionally. That's part of the thing that makes this so frustrating for me, personally. This line of discourse is overwhelmingly dominated by allistic people who all but say everyone is autistic in their own way, while revealing a mind-boggling lack of comprehension or basic empathy about what it is actually like to go through the world as an autistic person. They very evidently regard autistic self-advocates as, at most, slightly eccentric but basically normal, self-indulgent people whom they just find kind of grating for some mysterious reason that they do not interrogate at all.

It's like ... even when I'm ranting (like now!), I try to put things in a careful way, in large part because I am very easy to misunderstand IRL and I don't like it. But so many of these posts that I see being reblogged (by well-intentioned people who just ... don't get it) make me want to start screaming. Often the frustration takes me hours or days to articulate. Sometimes I'm just trying to think of some phrasing other than "shut the fuck up, you don't know what you're talking about." I never say that directly to any individual. But there is so much utterly unearned and misplaced overconfidence in so many of these posts that it's difficult not to feel it.

I reblogged a post from steinbecks which included a screencap of Anthony Oliveira/meakoopa on Twitter saying "everyone has a sandwich that they think about for the rest of their life."

I added:

#lol it has to be the filet mignon hamburger i got in la #with a brioche bun and gruyère cheese #it was the most extra hamburger i've eaten in my life #thank you for enabling the experience :P

[ETA 3/5/2024: for context, steinbecks and I met up in LA in 2015 or 2016 and went to a Mediterranean restaurant, where I meant to get Greek food but was distracted by the most extra hamburger description I'd ever seen in my life. She encouraged me to Experience it and it was, indeed, an experience. I did get baklava for dessert, though :P]

It’s struck me that part of the reason the fandom migration to Twitter bugs me so much is that … okay, I very definitely preferred LJ/DW to Tumblr, but part of the reason I set up shop here [ETA 3/4/2024: lol] was that I wanted to look at manips/photosets/gifs and the platform was genuinely better for them here. But Twitter isn’t structurally better for fandom purposes and it has unique downsides. Ugh.

Twitter fandom is kind of terrible for a lot of reasons, most of them much more important than this, but there’s this weird sort of leeching off of Tumblr fandom. I’m sure that people deserting Tumblr for Twitter is part of it, but almost everything seems like this concentrated, even more depersonalized version of Tumblr culture of ~five years ago. Eh.
anghraine: vader extending his lightsaber; text: and now for the airing of grievances! (Default)
I was backing up my professional/personal Twitter account to my writing Tumblr account, but Tumblr seems increasingly desperate, too. I'm not sure there really are many social media platforms left that seem at all stable.

Dreamwidth itself always has been, of course, but I'm not sure it's suited to this sort of account, and I guess there's Wordpress for a certain value of social media, which feels a bit weird given that it's a corporate cousin to Tumblr these days—but I hate navigating the block structure. So maybe I will just clean up my Dreamwidth quasi-mirror, but it's not exactly an interactive experience. IDK.

I know Denise said that Dreamwidth activity jumped up after the Reddit thing, so I'm kind of curious if the uhhh decisions made at Twitter will have a similar effect. I don't expect DW to ever take off in a big way (and probably wouldn't want it to!) and I don't really welcome Twitter's ongoing self-immolation just because it was so sudden and has such outsized effects, but I'm not above enjoying more activity here/at Tumblr.

I don't know if the Twitter Acquisition will have any effect at all, an outsized one à la Verizon/Yahoo, or what, but it can't be good. I've seen quite a few people talk about returning to Tumblr or even Dreamwidth and AGHHHHH NO. STAY IN YOUR CONTAINMENT AREA.
