Also, my ambivalence over this year’s birthday has been vacillating between “ack! how have I lived this long” and “YAY,” but now that it’s in one week, I’m just like … BIRTHDAYYYYYY

It feels a bit silly to measure time by fanfic, but according to AO3, it’s been over ten and a half years (!!!!!!!!!) since I finished First Impressions.

I’m just … it doesn’t feel recent, but it certainly doesn’t feel like that long, yet it was one of the last things I did in my all-Austen-fandom-all-the-time phase, before I jumped into SW fandom. And my earliest SW fics are ten years old now (somehow???).

But idk, it seems so strange.

Truly trivial complaints:

My birthday is coming up (the ides of March!!) and it’s a Significant Age, so people are like … you need to make a list so we have some idea of what to give you for the Significant Birthday!

Which is fair, but these days, the things I want are like … “my longtime best friend to live in the PNW again” and “my prelims to be over” and “a book cover for my perpetually unfinished novel” and “Amazon to do well by Númenor” and “a sudden desire to eat vegetables.”

I mean, there are plenty of things that occur to me in passing, but when it comes down to making a list, they all flee my mind and … ???

isn't it weird? By the time I'm used to being X age, I turn X+1! Why!

I replied:

Haha, yes, exactly! And my mother always jumps my age ahead a year about four months past my birthday, so after months of being 'no, it's X-1' I'm like... oh wait, actually, no.

My birthday is next month and this year, I’m struggling to wrap my brain around it. Like … it’s just marking another year of life (though after the last year, that isn’t nothing) but it’s also WOW. EVERY YEAR I GET OLDER. WHAT A CONCEPT.

I got into a debate with a friend that touched on the Ottoman genocides, I went to do some research to make sure I was remembering details correctly, fell down a rabbit hole of research, and wow I'm not sleeping tonight.

The conversational aside was specifically about the assassination of Talaat Pasha, which also happened on March 15th. My birthday! I mean, not my birthday at the time, obviously—I would not be born until many decades later—but it is certainly a day for the annals of history. I cherish and respect Tumblr's hatred of Julius Caesar, but he's got nothing on Talaat Pasha. I wish I believed in hell specifically so I could believe he's burning in it.

(Fun fact: my grandmother, who is Greek, used to hint darkly about some misdeed of "the Turks" that she's still got a grudge about, and for years, I thought she was just being vaguely Islamophobic. I did eventually get the impression of something happening not long before she was born, maybe. But I was still really unsure about any details until I was digging through some articles on a trip during my master's program and discovered that "vague misdeeds" were entire fucking genocides that my own country, the USA, did not find it politically convenient to acknowledge until years later.)

I’m usually very tired of winter by the time my birthday rolls around, but technically it falls on the winter side of March, and … idk, I just feel very much a winter-baby this year.

My parents got me, among a couple of other things, the new expansion for my favourite board game (Aeon's End) and the entire (!) "Skywalker Saga" set of SW movies, since I'd asked for a couple DVDs from either the OT or the PT (I've never owned all the PT and my OT DVDs are very old and scratched). I meant to use those to start getting good-quality copies piecemeal, but ... <3

(Feels a little weird to own TROS, ngl, but I'm fond of the other 8/9 despite gripes about certain particulars, so I'm still really happy and grateful about it. STAR WAAAARS)

I mostly have a great birthday on the Middle-earth front, since a) it coincides with the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, my favourite of all the Middle-earth battles, b) that battle specifically includes Éowyn laughing into the Witch-king’s face before stabbing him, and c) my favourite Tolkien character, Faramir, is saved from death on the same day!

But my second-favourite dies tragically :(

otoh … Éowyn
