anghraine: artist's rendition of faramir; text: i would not take this thing if it lay by the highway (faramir)

I’ve already written approximately a zillion words on the LOTR movies’ treatment of Faramir and why the usual defenses are so deeply unpersuasive to me, but somehow I have more in me.

(note: this is in reference to a post that's, um, still in my drafts folder)

I'm just thinking back on how I was willing to overlook quite a few things I had reservations about because I loved the rest so much. The rest was amazing! Like ... I disagreed with their choices wrt Aragorn, but otoh there's ROHAN!!

Faramir, though, was my breaking point. And it's not remotely all about the Ring, and—okay. Book Faramir is my fave, so I'm hardly unbiased. BUT one of the biggest issues w/ what they did to Faramir is that it's impossible to isolate. It's too bound up in the treatment of Frodo and Sam and Gollum and Denethor and Gondor and ~men are weak~ andandand. So it was also this point where I just ... couldn't unsee the rest.

(Heh, I just remembered: it was a discussion about movie Faramir that led me to delurk for the very first time when I was.... 17? 18? so I could be like YES EXACTLY! I HAVE FOUND MY PEOPLE! May the Emyn Arnen message board forever rest in peace.)
