The ultimate slam, as far as I'm concerned, was the invention of the "Steward's sword." They spent some of the very limited energy and enthusiasm they had available to give to Gondor on specially designing and constructing a non-functional sword in a gaudy scabbard as a metaphor for how they saw Denethor / Gondor / the Stewardship.
