I admit, I've been rather drawn to small corners of the asexual community and away from the main hubs (I'm going to call tumblr a main hub due to all the ace people I discovered and started following in the past two days - but it's still nowhere near as big as AVEN) for the past few years, so my experience with the ace community is limited, but yeah. Romantic orientation has been used mostly as a classification, with the largest divide being between aromantic and romantic, simply because of the difference between "romantic orientation matches sexual orientation" and "romantic and sexual orientations don't match."
At first, I had a hard time putting words to why all the attacking hurt me so much, and then when I realised that it was rooted in a poor understanding of how romantic and sexual orientation interact, things started to click and I felt less anxious/sick/hurt and more angry.
