I love AO3s tagging, I truly appreciate it. But I agree there could do with being a Minor/Background Characters and Ships section. I've got around it with "appearance by character x" and "background x/y" in the freeform but that's not ideal. Here you can of course tag as you wish consistently and all the fics will show up correctly :)
