It's not just me! I'm not sure exactly what's so uncomfortable about them, but -- something. Aside of having zero interest in Durnik, that is. That whole thing with enforced equality was pretty uncomfortable -- it was never even raised with Poledra or Vella, I don't think.

There is epic Troi hate, especially among the white male geek contingent. I'm not saying she was a good character because, like you say, 'I sense anger!' from a guy running at her with a sword falls a bit short of narrative brilliance, but she's no Wesley and I kind of side-eye the fanboy rage.
