I think I'd have liked Polgara/Durnik a lot better if we'd seen more of her feelings. It seems more like he adores her, so obviously they should be together. And since the relationships that she does actively pursue are all doomed, it becomes a bit worse in retrospect.
With the others, it's -- Poledra is functionally a sorceress, but Belgarath didn't know that when he married her, and none of the others are. Even Ce'Nedra isn't immortal, just long-lived, and her two or three hundred years is only a fraction of Garion's lifespan. There's a vague sort in-story justification, but for me it's -- pretty strongly gendered.
Sadly, I am completely unsurprised by young white male geeks hating on women in any kind of authority. Even weaksauce authority like Troi's.
