An anon on Tumblr asked,
sparked from your last elizabeth post with the "what we owe to each other" line - what four austen characters would entertain you in a Good Place-type setup? which four would have the most potential for chemistry and growth as a group? (not necessarily which four could torture each other effectively, because each austen novel already has that dynamic baked in.)
I said:
Elizabeth, Darcy, Mary Crawford, and Fanny Price are the first to come to mind, probably because I’m weak and they’re my two main Austen ships. But I do think they would make for a vastly entertaining group of judgmental people who have a lot of character growth ahead of them, but who are also intelligent, good-hearted, and able to influence and be influenced by each other.
Also, it would be hilarious.
Thank you, anon! This was a delightful thing to think about, and I would never have considered it myself.
ETA: I'm not sure if I'm more entertained by the idea of the assigned soulmates being All Wrong, or all the hijinks that would attend existentially canonized Darcy/Elizabeth and Mary/Fanny. Either way, it would be AMAZING.
ETA2: You know, I’d initially thought of Elizabeth as Eleanor, but it would make much more sense for Mary to be Eleanor, with Fanny as the moral influencer consumed with anxiety. Darcy is Tahani, of course, leaving Elizabeth as … Jason? LOL no, but ¾ isn’t bad.
Also, Darcy as the sole human man in the "good place" is kind of perfect in the context of "last man in the world." I am very definitely not writing this, but I'm really enjoying imagining it! Thanks!
...I'm genuinely entertained by the idea of Mary/Fanny as the A-plot while the B-plot is Darcy and Elizabeth quickly resolving their issues—but they still have all their cultural baggage so it's just slow burn UST. :D
