One of the weirder experiences in fandom is that ... it's pretty obvious that most people who follow me are doing it for the meta and either don't read or don't like the fic. It's not devastating or anything, but they're so intertwined for me that it feels pretty strange at times.

(I guess it makes a certain sort of sense, in that I went for a career in literary criticism over creative writing because lit-crit spoke to me more ... or something like that. Still, I'm pretty "..." about it.)

It's curious when you think about why people follow you (or more relevantly for me, interact) since we see ourselves as a whole but others only see parts of the whole. And then there's the multifandom aspect: I followed you for The Borgias content, but also enjoyed your Austen meta and your Rogue One fic. How do those things fit together? *shrugs* I'm sure others have the same experience with me in turn. It's kind of the age-old question of how well people know you.

Yeah, that's a good point—I think the way fandom (esp modern fandom IMO) splinters us in ways we aren't necessarily splintered to ourselves is what's going on. Not sure why the fic/meta division feels weirder than people who follow me for one fandom but not another, but it does.

If it's any consolation, I just ... don't read very much fic. I don't just stick to one fandom, I stick to one or two characters in that fandom. So it's very much not you but me.

For me, it's probably because even though we don't share fandoms, your metas still apply to the experience of _being_ in fandom, so it's got a... broader appeal, if that makes sense?
