The Rowling thing is so depressing. My personal sense of gender is ?????? so it doesn't really affect me personally, but ... blech. 

(I've heard some people saying that her attitudes are pretty mainstream among the British left, and that's ... also blech.)

I haven't read her full essay yet. I plan to, when things are less FULL CHAOS as they are now, but I've seen snippets and honestly - she's made her position clear. We know what she thinks. I don't need to drink from her awful well just to know what this specific type of awful tastes like (sort of like: does it help anything to watch the nth video of police beating up protesters? no; we know they're awful). It's definitely a seismic shift in how she's being perceived though when like, we knew she'd made statements like this before.

It's somehow more dispiriting to see all the replies to her stuff that's just "yeah! women's rights!" because if it's one person it's one thing but this is still pretty mainstream.

Yeah, I think it's been building, but this was kind of the death-knell for a lot of people. Though not everyone, obviously. :\

Re: the state of the British left: I dunno, I'm kind of in a bubble, but an email from my union yesterday: "For Pride month this year, we have used the Progress flag in our logo, which was designed in 2018 to be a more inclusive symbol of the LGBTQ+ community. By adding the colours of marginalised POC (People of Colour) and trans communities, it reflects greater progression and inclusion."

(Local Labour councillor's last email is less conclusively positive on this score but apparently they are embroiled in a genteel argument with the council chair over his failure to be gender neutral in his language.)

Eta: I mention these things not to disagree but to go 'here have some positive news'.
