I was thinking of my most Tumblr(TM) experiences, and tbh, I'm not sure anything will beat the time when I was talking about my undying loathing of the Young Turks (the architects of multiple genocides, not the news people, though I do despise the latter for choosing to honour the former). Naturally, the main response was someone asking if I hated them (the person asking), since they were young and Turkish.

I could see this as either trolling or 100% sincere, but either way, peak Tumblr.

I did not know about the origin of the term, and it is indeed horrifying.

My grandmother is Greek and talked vaguely about Bad Things happening, but I was an adult before I knew about the genocides in any kind of detail. They're horrible enough in their own right, but honouring the perpetrators is mind-boggling.

Seriously. I didn't know what the phrase meant until a year or so after I stopped watching them in... 2010?... for being SHOCKINGLY, ludicrously inaccurate when discussing the British electoral system, which ofc meant I couldn't trust them on anything where I didn't know enough to know if they were wrong. But it's such a weird, horrible choice of name.

Yeah, whenever they cross my dash or feed, it's usually because they're ludicrously wrong about something. It's not like I was ever going to like them, but naming themselves after the group who murdered vast swaths of my grandmother's and other people's ethnic groups is just ... what a choice. Apparently, the founder used to be an outright denier of the Young Turks' genocides but ultimately came to acknowledge them—but still hasn't changed the name.
