Jun. 19th, 2021 09:50 amAn anon asked:
Do you think any of the Equalists ever suggested taking direct action against Tarrlok, up to and including straight up killing him? If so, what would Noatak's reaction be, both as Amon, and as his true self?
I replied:
It’s hard to imagine that someone wouldn’t have suggested taking direct action against Tarrlok, given everything he did. I’m not sure if people were really in the habit of making suggestions to Amon himself, but at the least, I think there’d be Something Must Be Done talk that would reach his ears.
I think he’d intellectually understand why they can’t just leave Tarrlok to oppress people and why people want something to be done about him, even if the “something” is unclear. Internally, though—i.e., as Noatak—I suspect his kneejerk reaction to any potential threat to Tarrlok would be fury (esp if anyone was talking assassination), which of course he’d have to conceal as Amon. And he’d need some justification for leaving him alone for so long.
I’m not sure what his plans for his brother were before Tarrlok spun out of control, but I do feel like the situation forced Noatak’s hand to a certain extent, given how long it took him to target Tarrlok and that Amon couldn’t justify not acting at that point. So I tend to think that he didn’t really want to move against Tarrlok, was dragging his feet and coming up with bullshit justifications for it, and when he did act, felt like he’d been placed in a situation where he had to do it (hence the quasi-apology). That fits a scenario where the Equalists were pretty restive about Tarrlok. So his ultimate reaction would be, well, canon.
