I really want to be done with academia, but also, I don't want to lose my health insurance. My asthma medication would cost $400 a month and I take mood stabilizers and antipsychotics, too. My asthma is okay most of the time (though not during fire season!!), but the other two are PRETTY IMPORTANT to my peace of mind and survival, so stopping isn't really an option. But I'm so tired of this whole culture and... :(

American healthcare is such a sham. I understand where you're coming from. I have insurance, but I'm so afraid of losing it if I start to work regularly.

How close are you to defending and getting out? I'm sorry, I know this must be a rough as heck time to be a grad student of any discipline.

Yeah, it has been—thank you! This is my final year, so all going well, I'll be done at the end of spring semester (summer at latest). I'm really looking forward to it, but also, I've got to wrangle student health and disability stuff to at least have some more paperwork in order before I graduate, since it'll be a lot more difficult to get afterwards (my uni's health services and insurance are actually pretty good, but of course, it all evaporates when you graduate).
