There are some white western Europeans on my dash who are like ... oh, casting POC in the production just smacks of American tokenism, and they confidently deliver their important white western European opinions on the actors' hair, and "of course the Americans will fall for it so they don't look racist" blahblah.

Obviously Amazon's approach is not above criticism (much less Amazon itself), and I know random US Americans can be obnoxious as fuck and there are many horrible aspects to our culture and US centrism is a thing etc. But sometimes, it really does seem like people believe that attaching "American" to their arguments magically makes them not racist. And they're so incredibly assured about the correctness of their arguments and the urgency of delivering them, when it would cost nothing to just ... confine themselves to complaining about Elrond's ambition or the Fëanorian star or whatever the hell.

The difference between the US and Europe is not that we are more racist than they are, but rather, we've spent a lot more time in the last seventy years dealing with our shit. Which necessarily involves airing the dirty laundry so it can be dealt with. Europe has most if not all of the same ideological baggage ... they just have been able to avoid large-scale confrontation about it.
