on 2023-02-09 08:20 pm (UTC)I started out on the "big" instance, mastodon.social, but after a couple of months I moved to aus.social -- mainly because I found myself reading the local feed there a lot, and enjoying it. Changing was a matter of clicking a bunch of buttons, and I think my friends had to refollow me, but it was very painless.
There definitely doesn't seem to be an etiquette as such, provided you follow the rules of your local instance. When I first joined, there was a lot of fingerwagging at Twitter users about the need to use content warnings on anything even slightly political (this has faded as PoC point out that this is used to silence them), and there was debate about whether or not it's acceptable to promote your own work (of course it is).
There seems to be a higher percentage of Men Who Explain Things on Twitter, but maybe it's just that Mastodon is smaller so it's easier for them to find me?
Anyway, I recommend looking at the local feeds of a bunch of instances -- you might like wandering.shop, which has a lot of authors -- but remember, it's easy to up and leave.
