I hate the assumption that any and all female characters will take their husbands' names, but I hate it most for Leia. I know it was an EU thing for some absurd reason, so I assume it's clinging to that or whatever, but also. Ugh.
And "well, actually I headcanon that both take their spouses' names in some form and so that's why she..." is a band-aid for a much wider and more obnoxious trend that people cannot seem to stop assuming will be a thing in every conceivable case (including in space, in a different galaxy!).

on 2023-08-28 07:52 am (UTC)What really bothers me is Breha. Breha is queen! In a matriarchy! in what fucking world would she take her husband's name?!? Which is why I headcanon that the "Senator Bail Antilles of Alderaan" who gets mentioned as a candidate for Chancellor in TPM is Leia's dad, and he took his wife's last name when they got married.
