Aside from fannish rage, that is.

(1) I got permission not just to do a podfic, but a podfic commentary from wyncatastrophe. I posted the first two parts here and here; the third part should be up tomorrow. I had a blast, too.

(2) I keep meaning to see TPM in 3-D but haven't worked myself up to paying for a ticket for a movie I intensely dislike. At the same time, I really want it to do well - and then AOTC (which I also hate), and ROTS (which I mildly dislike), so that by the time I'm twenty-eight, I will FINALLY be able to see Star Wars itself in the theatre, and then The Empire Strikes Back in 3-D OMG MAKE IT SO.

(3) I ran across a generally awesome tribute/supertrailer for the OT. A disappointing lack of Leia, but otherwise very shiny and very clever (e.g., instead of illustrating Obi-Wan's exposition with actual PT clips, they used the celebratory tidbits from the SEs - so it's 100% original trilogy material even when talking about the PT).

They also did a PT tribute. In a shocking twist, I didn't like that one as much, but I do think it highlights how visually gorgeous the PT was. I occasionally get bogged down in "characterization" and "plot" and such, but credit where credit's due - these were beautiful movies.

And one for Avatar: the Last Airbender (the series, tyvm), which I thought was a lovely overview with tons of awesome bending (probably what I'd show someone who wanted a quick idea of what it looked like), though still not quite as beautifully put together as the OT tribute:

I
want to do a full rec post, because there are a lot of amazing fanvids out there, but I haven't had the time. Maybe in a few days!

(4) Speaking of fanvids, [personal profile] hl and I are going to try and get some idea of how to make one. It should be lulzy, anyway.

(5) And speaking of ATLA, a meme from ladyhadhafang:

Tell me you want to play and I'll pick up to three of your fandoms. Then update your journal and answer the following questions:

1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?
2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?
4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom?

I was given Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Avatar: the Last Airbender.

SW:

(1) I saw TPM when I was in middle school (hated it), and then ANH (too freaked out to know what I felt) and didn't get into it - it was only when my best friend forcibly sat me down in - 2002? 2003? I don't know, we were fourteen or fifteen - and made me watch his original VHS editions of the original trilogy, all three in a single sitting, that I fell madly in love. Especially with Empire. (This is why "you're just nostalgic" and "you just think George Lucas molested your childhood" and "it's really just a generational thing" annoys me so much.)

Anyway, I wasn't in any fandom at the time, I just had to forcibly put them out of my mind or I'd think about them nonstop - and then, after I finished a long and very exhausting fic, I decided I desperately needed something lighter that I could lose myself in and, remembering SW, went for that. And - I'm still here.

(2) I suspect I'll stay. I don't generally leave fandoms altogether, and I'm not really any less into this after two years, so I don't see myself leaving.

(3) The Empire Strikes Back, hands down. My favourite of the books is Splinter of the Mind's Eye (though half-ironically) and Shadows of the Empire (though I don't regard it as any more canon than the others - I just happen to like it).

(4) I write fanfic, write meta, participate in discussions (if in a rather passive-aggressive way, a lot of the time) and would really like to create graphic stuff but don't know how (and suck at drawing). We'll see if I can remedy that, because there are so many cracky fanvids that need to exist. (I mean Star Wars set to The Messiah - this needs to be a thing! Search your feelings, you know it's true.)

(5) It'd be nice, but I'm really rather happy knowing most of the people in the fandom, and not knowing the ones I don't want to know. It's not remotely a small fandom, but it's a rather intimate one, somehow.

LOTR:

(1) The Hobbit was assigned reading in the sixth grade. I was supposed to read it over six weeks and read it that day instead. It's hard to stop, okay? (I could never be Mark Oshiro. Not that anyone except Mark could be.) It took me like three years to get through the first half of Fellowship - and then I read the second half, TTT, and ROTK all that night (...and morning; I got about three hours' sleep). As soon as I figured out that fandom was a thing, I started digging around for Tolkien stuff, found the Faramir fandom, and lurked for months before finally delurking. I found fic by searching for fics that had Faramir and Gandalf in them - it's still one of my favourite relationships in the books, understated as it is.

It's my first fandom and so there's a huge amount of affection attached, even though I don't do much with it. Except at Mark Reads, because people keep being WRONG on the INTERNET of course "Faramir" doesn't mean "sufficient jewel." That would be Sindarin and his name is obviously Quenya. Also, I'm taking a Tolkien class at the moment that's strangely like a forum.

(2) I can't see myself ever moving on entirely, though I'm not sure I'll ever get up to my ears in it the way I used to be. :(

(3) The Two Towers, probably. I think it's the best, at any rate, and FARAMIR <3 <3 <3

I definitely like Fellowship best of the movies.

(4) I talk about Tolkien-y things sometimes and poke at fic a little, but haven't done much else other than that. Barring the above.

(5) Nah, it's pretty solid.

ATLA

(1) Mark did it over at Mark Reads, and I'd heard that Mark Hamill was in it, so I figured it was ~meant to be~ and that I might as well try the first episode. About two weeks later, I was finishing the series finale and going "!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I'm not at all active in the fandom, though. I just lurk sometimes.

(2) Stay.

(3) Favourite episode...?

Uh...

Well-

Let me narrow it down.

Book 1: "The Storm," "Winter Solstice Part II," "The Waterbending Master," and "the Siege of the North"
Book 2: "The Blind Bandit," "Zuko Alone," "The Drill," "City of Walls and Secrets" (this is actually my favourite season, I just love so much of it that I can't really pick out anything in particular)
Book 3: "The Beach" (yes, I went there), "The Avatar and the Fire Lord," "The Day of Black Sun," "The Firebending Masters," "The Boiling Rock," "Sozin's Comet"

Many of my favourite scenes are from "Sozin's Comet," but it's the only one of these that actively annoys me at the same time. In terms of enjoyment undiluted by nitpicking, I'm thinking it'd have to be ... idk, "The Blind Bandit" and "Zuko Alone."

(4) I'm pretty sure I've only lurked. No fanfic or art or even meta, somehow.

(5) It's doing pretty good, I think - at least if TV Tropes is anything to go by.
