Yay ides of March!
Mar. 15th, 2012 10:23 pmSo I'm twenty-six today, and it feels rather odd, but I had an awesome birthday. My mother bought me a pot of daffodils, and I spent hours at Powell's Books (the local bookstore with over one million books at this location, hell yeah) and had ultra-bittersweet hot chocolate (yum!) and then went to the Mongolian grill. Also I don't have homework, for once!
As well as being the 2056th anniversary of Julius Caesar's death, March 15th is mentioned in Lord of the Rings as the day that Théoden died. Wow, thanks Tolkien - but hey, doesn't that mean it's also the day that Éowyn slew the Witch-King?
Why, yes. Yes, it does. So to finish off the fabulous day I've just had, I'm going to do a picspam of a fabulous character: Éowyn, and mostly Éowyn's shining moment on March 15th.

Éowyn and the Nazgûl, by April Martin
I love the lights and shadows here, and the way she includes the battle in the background. I don't really see Merry, though?

Ditto, Carmen Cianelli.
Hey, Merry's here this time! He looks awfully menacing, though. But I like Éowyn and the creepy glimpse of Théoden's arm. The background battle doesn't work as well for me here but hey, Minas Tirith!

Corey Godbey
Not usually a style I like, but I really enjoy it here - especially Merry, who's much more how I see him - terrified, nondescript, easy to miss.

Craig J Spearing
I adore this one - Théoden and Snowmane, Merry, the glimpses of the battle, the angle with Sauron's forces scaling the walls, the lighting, Éowyn's sensible armour, everything. I couldn't even bear to scale it down further than I had to, just because it's so gorgeous.

David Demaret
This one's another favourite, though I don't care for the background as much, or Éowyn's lady armour (seriously, nobody guessed with that breastplate?). But this Witch-King is a lot more eldritch-abomination-ish, and the fell beast is very ... fell, and I love her hair here.

Eddie Sharam
Not all over this one, tbh. It's too ... something, I don't know what. But I do like Éowyn's very strong features, and I rather like this Witch-King.

Erin Kelso
Again, not a style I generally care for, and the some rising from the fell beast's neck is really weird, but I like Éowyn.

Jake Murray
Something about her pose, but I do like this - the frame is gorgeous, the Witch-King scary, and Merry present.

Jesse Robertson
"Come at me, bro."
Seriously, I've never seen an Éowyn quite so unimpressed (and possibly disinterested) by everything. It's interesting, anyway.

Jorge Carrero
There's something rather cartoonish about this one, and Éowyn seems ... almost generic, but I like the angle and the Witch-King.

Milivoj Ceran
This is an awesome framing device.

Nick Delagaris
Holy plate armour, Batman! And the Witch-King has apparently decided to pull a Maleficent and call on ALL THE POWERS OF HELL!! Still pretty badass, though.

Oliver Mainerding
Love love love love this one.

Preston Stone
Speaking of interesting angles! Quite the fell beast, too - but I'm not in love with this Éowyn.

Malaya Terrenal
This appears to be a terrible misunderstanding. Don't hurt him, Éowyn, he just wants to be friends!

Rob Sample
Another one that's interesting - I'm not sure how much I like it, but it's definitely different, with a much less generic Éowyn, and a nicely distinct style.

Sam Manley
I don't like Éowyn's face, but the style is really cool.

Vuk Kostic
This one is... weird. He never wanted to be a Ringwraith, he just wanted to be a ballerina! Alternatively, he's telling her to go to her room. Meanwhile, Éowyn's like "this sword is REALLY HEAVY. Who would have guessed?"

Adam Schumpert
I really like this one, too - at least Éowyn and the Witch-King. Merry is a bit too peripheral, if that's him at all.

Éowyn, Mandy Tsung
Unquestionably the most beautiful Éowyn I've ever seen (this could just as easily be Galadriel), and it's nice to see one that's not blue-eyed (she isn't in the books - though admittedly, not hazel-eyed either). This really captures her icy dignity, I think - most Éowyns are too warm and open for me. Not quite how I see her, but I wholeheartedly admire this one.

Faramir & Eowyn, by ellaine
Faramir looks a little Snapeish (though accurately so, since the Gondorians are supposed to be paler but are almost never presented that way) and Éowyn rather colourless, but it's still gorgeous - I particularly like the city and the starry cloak.

Éowyn, by ellaine
Now this one of hers I do love, blue eyes notwithstanding. Her stony expression, her hair, the line of Rohirrim at her back, all of it.

Eowyn (2) by Alina Pereswet
Again, not quite as I see her, but I like how different this one is. Not as much personality as some of the others, though.

Faramir and Éowyn in the houses of healing, Anke Eissmann
I like the Faramir here - he's closer to Faramir-in-my-head than many of those I've seen (certainly more than the movie version!), and I always enjoy her paintings. Her Éowyn isn't quite right for me, though.

Éowyn and Faramir, by Anke Eissmann
They're a little pallid here, and no way is his hair going to mingle with hers. It's still wonderfully evocative, though, and I love her hair and the darkness of Mordor and the starry mantle.
