I thought the mass of deleted and inactive Tumblr blogs was disturbing when I got into LOK fandom again, but although there are less of them in SW fandom, it's even more unsettling that there are as many as there are. This is an absolutely massive fandom, it's the fandom that got me most of my own followers, and it's the one that I went to Tumblr for in the first place. And while it's not the desert that some of my old fandoms have become, there are still a wide variety of blogs that have just vanished.

Maybe some of it is the effect of time, or shifting to TV, or a lessening of good will in the wake of the ST, or less epic SW stories in general, or fandoms becoming increasingly transient. But mostly it seems like Tumblr is, indeed, dying. For all its many problems and flaws ... :\

I’ve been working on a detailed outline of the Lucyverse, and I got all the way through the OT! *\0/*

...it’s a mere 15 pages.

My bloodbending brothers anon asked:

On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being "sticking to verbal reprimands," 10 being "all of them died under mysterious circumstances," how would Noatak react to Equalists acting on their own and straight up killing Tarrlok for the Dragon Flats incident? For simplicity's sake, it'd happen the same night of said incident, before the fight between Tarrlok and Korra.

I reblogged this screencap:

I’ve pointed it out before, but I particularly love-hate that their expressions are absolutely identical in this scene. Noatak might have gotten a kick out of bloodbending eventually, but at first, he was every bit as perturbed as Tarrlok.

I reblogged a post/rant about the murder-suicide I'd made back in Sep 2012:

I reblogged a fic snippet I wrote in Sep 2012:

I wrote Noarra fluff?

Because … um. Because obviously this pairing is for schmaltzy teenage romance? (Time travel, like threesomes, solves everything! But this is not a threesome, because Tarrlok is eleven.)

Anyway! This takes place somewhere in the iceberg!verse (to sum up, Aang dies in the Air Nomad genocide, Korra is born 100+ years early, seals herself into the iceberg at thirteen, is discovered by Noatak and Tarrlok), so it’s mildly spoilery for the future of that.

anghraine: tarrlok glowering through his hair; text: lost (tarrlok [lost])
I reblogged a gifset of Noatak taking Tarrlok's bending and saying "I am the solution."

My addition:

I’m still not sure if he’s performing as part of what he “has” to do, or if he really thinks he’s solving Tarrlok’s little bloodbending problem for him.

I mean ... what the hell must Noatak have thought, seeing Tarrlok gloating as he bloodbends? I can see him as pretty sincere here.

A Tumblr anon said:

I found a non-tumblr post via Google, titled "Yakone's Sons Revisited". It talks about the boat scene after the Book 1 commentary came out. It's an interesting read.

I replied:

I googled it and … yeah, interesting!

I agree with some of the details, but I do pretty firmly disagree with it when it comes to the fundamentals. That is: in general I like Bryke, like LOK, think they deserve their share of the credit for ATLA, and strongly feel that the narrative endorses Tarrlok’s view.

I do agree with the general analysis of Tarrlok’s thought process—I just don’t think that in-story reasoning has a lot of bearing on the construction of the narrative and the purpose its serves in the wider story. Personally, it’s very difficult not to feel that the purpose of the murder-suicide was, first and foremost, to conveniently remove Noatak and Tarrlok from the story (to the point that they’re almost never even referred to again, by contrast to the multi-season influence of Unalaq, Zaheer, and Kuvira), and secondly, to do it in such a way as to resolve their tragedy on a “noble” note.

I’m not persuaded by the blogger’s interpretation of Bryke’s commentary on Tarrlok, either, even though I think it’s fair to disregard creators’ interpretative authority. Everything I’ve heard from them inclines me to think the intent was that Tarrlok courageously did what had to be done, rather than, say, that Tarrlok was too damaged to see any other way. And I think that intent is very present in how the scene is framed.

Korra and Noatak!

(I'm still sticking with the time-travelling clones theory.)
