The "should I play Shadowheart or my Dark Urge paladin Alexandra" dilemma has been resolved in an ... unfortunate way.

Spoilers for the Dark Urge BG3 arc around level 3:

I chose the Dark Urge instead of Custom for Alexandra to have a storyline while still being able to change my appearance + a bit of an edge to my paladin. Okay. I figured I'd just resist the urge, but it'd be interesting to have it.

Turns out this is only sometimes an option! I discovered this by waking from a long rest to find that I'd brutally murdered a friendly bard in the middle of camp. Um. I don't want to go around being railroaded into particularly nasty murders, actually! So either it's play my barely-started Shadowheart game as my main game, or reboot Alexandra as a fully custom character.

Hmmmmmm.

Oh dear D: Is it true you can't do the romances as an existing character? I would find that off putting, though not as much as random murder beyond my control /o\ Sorry you have to replay so much either way!

Oh dear indeed!

I haven't heard that there's anything preventing a romance as an Origin character. In D:OS2, playing one of the pre-existing characters was the only way to have a romance, in fact, so a total reversal would be a bit strange. What I suspect is that the romance is more specific to the character you chose if it's one of "theirs".

And thanks! I had just decided to do my Shadowheart run later, after all, because I'd just picked up Karlach in my other run, and now it's six to one, half dozen the other. I'm thinking of a Shadowheart/Karlach romance if I can make it work, but otoh, it's so gratifying to get Shadowheart's approval as an OC. >_>
