Mar. 6th, 2024 07:54 amThe book I’m reading is difficult (it discusses a lot of Greek and Roman texts I have never read and know only through Ovid), but shout-out to the author (Gordon Braden) for one of my favorite endnotes ever:
“I am sympathetic, but unconvinced.”

Mar. 4th, 2024 12:51 pmMore seriously, all of Ovid’s maidens devoted to Diana are making me think of The Canterbury Tales and Emily’s prayer to Diana:
Chaste goddesse, wel wostow that I
Desire to ben a mayden al my lyf,
Ne nevere wol I be no love ne wyf.
I am, thow woost, yet of thy compaignye,
A mayde, and love huntynge and venerye,
And for to walken in the wodes wilde,
And noght to ben a wyf and be with childe.
Noght wol I knowe compaignye of man.
(Chaste goddess, well you know that I
Desire to be a maiden all my life,
Never would I wish to be beloved or wife.
I am, thou knowest, yet of thy company,
A maid, and love hunting and venery,
And walking in the wild woods,
And not to be a wife and be with child.
I would not wish to know company of man.)
It usually ends badly, though :(

Feb. 29th, 2024 05:24 pmYou all are probably tired of hearing about the Aeneid, but I just have to share this bit of an incredibly cool speech that Juno gets:
“But if my powers
Are not great enough, why should I hesitate
To seek help from any source whatever?
If I cannot sway Heaven, I will awaken Hell!”
Tagged: #not at all favorably portrayed but unmistakably badass #also i like venus here but juno's call-out of her re: paris was very satisfying

Feb. 14th, 2022 04:19 pmAs the forests shed their leaves, as the year declines,
And the oldest fall, so perish those former generations
Of words, while the latest, like infants, are born and thrive.
…Many words that are now unused will be rekindled,
Many fade now well-regarded, if Usage wills it so,
To whom the laws, rules, and control of language belong.
