anghraine: various thickly-bound books on the shelves of a library (library)

my off-the-cuff review: costumes and set great, acting and some scenes good, felt that the script didn't give some plots the 'weight/space' they needed maybe?

[ETA 7/11/2024: I still haven't seen it, so I can't judge properly!]

An anon asked:

Have you seen emma 2020 yet? I'm dying to know your take on it haha

I replied:

I haven’t, sorry!

I’d like to say that it’s the PhD taking up too much of my time, but … lbr, it’s actually that I’ve been watching cartoons for seven-year-olds.

An anon asked:

What are your thoughts on the newest adaptation of „Emma”?

I replied:

I haven’t seen it! Something about the aesthetic bugs me and Emma the book isn’t my fave, so I haven’t felt the need.

[ETA 2/8/2022: damn, I still haven't seen it. I own it! But ... hm.]

Hi! I love your Austen analyses, and I particularly like to read ones about Emma, which is my favorite of her works. I know how you feel about some of the adaptations, and I'm curious about your opinion about the newest Emma adaptation (2020) starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Johnny Flynn? I read some of the interviews for the film and it sounds wonderful tbh since the actress said that her Emma is going to be a little unlikable.

I replied:

Thank you! The reviews seem good, so I’m looking forward to seeing it, but otherwise, I don’t have much of an opinion. I do think it’s important that Emma is allowed to be unlikable (to many) at points—as Austen herself was perfectly conscious of! So … *fingers crossed*

heckofabecca asked:

Do you have any thoughts about the new Emma adaptation coming out? What's your favorite adaptation of it so far?

I replied:

I honestly don’t have a lot of thoughts about it, sorry! I looked up some reviews and got annoyed (not at the adaptation specifically), so I’m just kind of … we’ll see when it comes out, I guess?

My favourite Emma adaptation is, of course, Clueless. :)

(IDK about the former, but the latter really hits the sweet spot of a) thoughtfully engaging with its source material, and b) creating something that's fully operative and rich in its own right.)

Hi, I hope you're doing well! I'm so sorry to bother you, but I was just wondering if you saw the new trailer for the upcoming adaptation of Emma and if you had any thoughts on it. Granted it's not very long, but I love seeing what people do with Austen adaptations. Thanks!

I replied:

Thank you! I’m grading, so I appreciate distractions :)

I did see the trailer. On the one hand, I agree that it’s always interesting to see what people do with Austen! And it’s easier when I have less emotional investment, which tbh is the case with Emma (I love Emma herself, but I’m not as engaged with the novel as a whole).

For me, the trailer was so short and fast that it’s hard to get a real sense of things. I have the feeling that it’s going to be ~unconventional~ in some way or another, though it’s hard to pin down why, and something … idk, grates a little. But I’m not sure what it is! I hope it’s a solid, creative adaptation, though.

I'd like to be deeper, but tbh my deepest feeling about the new Emma is grumpiness that it's not P&P (or at least Persuasion or MP). We haven't had a straightforward P&P adaptation since 2005 and that was a pretty loose one. We didn't even get a proper one for the bicentennial!

I do hope it's successful on general principle and an interesting take on the novel etc etc. But Emma and S&S are my least favourites, so ... eh.

(Okay, in fairness: P&P has a bunch of adaptations and gets a LOT more attention than the other novels, so it's hardly the end of the world that one of the other novels is getting a couple of more-closely spaced adaptations. I'm just whining because P&P is my favourite.)
