anghraine: a man with long black hair and a ring on his hand (faramir [hair])

A further grab bag of my short(er) Tolkien posts on Tumblr:

On May 22nd, I said:

I still think about this

“Aragorn is descended in direct lineage, father to father, from Isildur Elendil’s son himself. And the sword that he bears was Elendil’s sword.”

A murmur of astonishment ran through all the ring of men. Some cried aloud: ‘the sword of Elendil! The sword of Elendil comes to Minas Tirith! Great tidings!’ But Faramir’s face was unmoved.

“Maybe,” he said.

-

“He [Faramir] is a man of staunch will, for already he had come close under the Shadow before ever he rode to battle on the out-walls. Slowly the dark must have crept on him, even as he fought and strove to hold his outpost. Would that I could have been here sooner.”

…Now Aragorn knelt beside Faramir, and held a hand upon his brow. And those that watched felt that some great struggle was going on. For Aragorn’s face grew grey with weariness; and ever and anon he called the name of Faramir, but each time more faintly to their hearing, as if Aragorn himself was removed from them, and walked afar in some dark vale, calling for one that was lost.

…he cast the leaves into bowls of steaming water that were brought to him, and at once all hearts were lightened. …Aragorn stood up as one refreshed, and his eyes smiled as he held a bowl before Faramir’s dreaming face.

…Suddenly Faramir stirred, and he opened his eyes, and he looked on Aragorn who bent over him; and a light of knowledge and love was kindled in his eyes, and he spoke softly. “My lord, you called me. I come. What does the king command?”

“Walk no more in the shadows, but awake!” said Aragorn. “You are weary. Rest awhile, and take food, and be ready when I return.”

“I will, lord,” said Faramir. “For who would lie idle when the king has returned?”

I just ... they deserve so much more! Look, I know Tolkien didn't mean it in the shipping sense BUT I still feel that saying outright that Faramir loves Aragorn goes underappreciated. And this after Aragorn has been praising him to the skies despite having never met him while Faramir lies unconscious (what a good trope)! And considering how 'meh' Faramir was about him initially!

I mean... I would totally be into an AU where there was no mystical healing experience and they actually have to go from meh to love but it is A+++ as is. I want ALL the fic about their bookverse relationship. And there is so little! :( I started some on my own but it's ... not my usual thing so *screams into the abyss*

On May 26th, irresistible-revolution responded to my shrieking about Finrod/Andreth:

ugh I’m WRECKED all over again. This OT3 deserve their own book, film, musical, everything tbh!

I said:

‘I will tell him,’ said Finrod. 'But I might as well tell thee not to weep. He is a warrior, Andreth, and a spirit of wrath. In every stroke that he deals he sees the Enemy who long ago did thee this hurt.

'But you are not for Arda. Whither you go may you find light. Await us there, my brother—and me.’

She replied:

“AWAIT US THERE MY BROTHER AND ME” always punches me directly in the throat. This is possibly my fave romance in the legendarium

I said:

Same! That line and “alone to the end, remembering the morning in the hills of Dorthonion” are always just … !!!! what are you doing, Tolkien?

On May 27th, I said:

“But in the wearing of the swift years of Middle-earth the line of Meneldil son of Anárion failed, and the Tree withered, and the blood of the Númenoreans became mingled with lesser men.”

—Elrond, LOTR

uh

On May 29th, I made an offhand post that unexpectedly took off (somewhat):

Sometimes I just … remember that Imrahil personally carries Faramir in his arms from the field of battle.

I mean, for one, Faramir would be well over six feet tall, so Imrahil must be super strong. Númenóreans are supposed to be, anyway, but it’s still quite the image.

But for another, Faramir is his sister-son. That’s one of the most important family ties in Middle-earth, and … Faramir is his only sister-son now, and literally dying in his arms as Imrahil carries him to the White Tower.

It’s just. Imrahil.

tagged: #and then he just up and tells denethor 'your son has returned - lord - after great deeds' #which given how faramir left is a next-level 'fuck you' #and both understandable and really harsh in the circumstances #à la 'it was the lord of the city who gave the errand to him' in fact #and just all of that together gives such an image of imrahil as a person and an uncle #<3 #one of the most blink-and-you-miss-it relationships that accordingly gets very little attention #but!!! literally carrying him from the battlefield through the circles of minas tirith to the white tower is so #!!!!!!

Also on May 29th, I predictably screamed about Faramir, my eternal fave:

But now wheeling swiftly across it, like shadows of untimely night, he saw in the middle airs below him five birdlike forms, horrible as carrion-fowl yet greater than eagles, cruel as death.

‘Black Riders!’ muttered Pippin. ‘…They are looking for something, surely? See how they wheel and swoop, always down to that point over there! And can you see something moving on the ground? Dark little things. Yes, men on horses: four or five.’

… ‘Faramir! The Lord Faramir! It is his call!’ cried Beregond. ‘Brave heart! But how can he win to the Gate, if these foul hell-hawks have other weapons than fear? But look! They hold on. They will make the Gate. No! the horses are running mad. Look! the men are thrown; they are running on foot. No, one is still up, but he rides back to the others. That will be the Captain: he can master both beasts and men. Ah! there one of the foul things is stooping on him. Help! help! Will no one go out to him? Faramir!’

Other things I’ll never be over: Faramir riding back to help 3-4 other men while five Nazgûl are chasing him.

Later that day, I reblogged a Tolkien quote about Denethor from UT because of Denethor bashing in my notes:

Denethor was a man of great strength of will, and maintained the integrity of his personality until the final blow of the (apparently) mortal wound of his only surviving son. He was proud, but this was by no mean merely personal: he loved Gondor and its people, and deemed himself appointed by destiny to lead them in this desperate time. And in second place the Anor-stone was his by right, and nothing but expediency was against his use of it in his grave anxieties.
