things that are beautiful (Days 29 & 30)

Some days are just glorious.
I was looking at My Guests at my livejournal and ended up surfing across Doctor Who tags. It was all nice enough, of course, but then I ran across "River Song/Eleven/Romana."
guys guys this is a thing everything is beautiful and nothing hurts
Then ... well, I've mentioned before that, when Luke finds his uncle's and aunt's corpses, at first he looks appropriately grief-stricken, then he gets this expression that I find super creepy à la Anakin-high-on-the-Dark-Side (which is part of the reason why "Luke is nothing like his father or sister, he's just sweet and kind and a little self-deluding like Padmé - Leia got all the rage and hatred" doesn't work for me):

However, I always figured that interpretation was a sort of resistant reading on my part - that he's not really supposed to be unsettling, just horrified and devastated. Righteously angry, maybe? So it was just my weird interpretation. Then I was looking through the A New Hope script for something totally unrelated, and ran across the directions:
He is stunned and cannot speak. Hate replaces fear and a new resolve comes over him.
okay he's supposed to be filled with hatred ahahahahahahahahaha
There seriously needs to be an icon juxtaposing hatred-filled!Luke and hatred-filled!Anakin, for maximum creeptastic points. I don't know why, Skywalkers going into homicidal rage is just endearing to me for some reason. But it's not totally in my head, yay.
Aaaaaaaand, I hadn't really been able to find a decent model for Lucy/girl!Luke, but then hikarific suggested (mentioned?) the young Sissy Spacek, and OMG the closest I've seen by far:

Which was amazing enough, but then I ran across somebody who kindly linked "Carrie and Carrie":

omg ~perfect~
I need a Lucy icon too
On that note of glee, time for-
Day 29: a female-centric fic rec
I have so many of these, because fandom can be faily but also amazing. But, actually, I think I'm going to choose a "new" one. That is, I not only hadn't read this fic when I started the meme, I didn't know anything about the canon it came from except that it had Mark Hamill in it and Mark Oshiro was about to watch it and the fandom has rabid shippers. Yup, that's right. Avatar: The Last Airbender.
There's a lot of super-amazing female-centric fic for the show, which itself is pretty awesome re: female characters (though not without the occasional detour to Failville yes creepy old lady mentor with creepy moon-fueled powers I'm looking at you especially next to the awesome old dude mentors), but the one I'm going to choose is Imagine the Ocean by Damkianna.
Guys it's Avatar!Katara! But that's not all! There are many awesome lady characters besides the totally kickass Avatar. I'm trying not to spoil anything, but let's say that a lot of women are not fridged AT ALL, there's a wonderful Fire Nation lieutenant who happens to be a woman (but it's not merely cosmetic gender either), and the reinvented Yue is particularly enjoyable. Also, the male characters are not demonized or erased to showcase the women, which I like (Aang the spirit guide is made of lulz, Sokka is great, and I really like her Zuko too), and she just completely succeeds at making women awesome. And not Sues! Just badass.
Day 30: Whatever you'd like!
Eurgh, I'm terrible at this kind of thing. Um, I don't think I got to choose Charlotte Lucas for any of the days, and I really like her, so ... fic! It's not the only one I've read or even loved by any means, but I think it's the fairest, and most neatly reflects my view of her.
