Nov. 14th, 2023 06:37 pmI nobly spent most of today advancing the dissertation chapter I'm working on to 10 pages rather than praying to Mystra to kill suffering hyenas for Gale approval points. Ugh.
I did another quest and got quite a bit more ambient dialogue from the party members! This is one of my favorite aspects of the game tbh, though it tragically wasn't Shadowheart and Lae'zel this time. But Gale decided his scholarly curiosity about approximately everything should encompass the githyanki.

Ohhh, your Tav's "if only I had true wizardly power this wouldn't be happening to me :(" is really fun, and definitely resonates with their drive to hang onto what power they obtain. I love it! Also a fun contrast with Larissa's "If only I'd been more faithful this wouldn't be happening to me :("
and now they're terrified of being Found Out and losing it all
I love it, especially combined with a Gale romance. It's totally fair to wonder if he'd think less of Tav if Gale knew they weren't a "real" prodigy like him.

Haha, thank you! There's nothing like playing three D&D clerics in a row and then a celestial warlock to appreciate Guiding Bolt, esp at low levels! And a critical hit with it ... whew. (I'm playing a wizard in a Pathfinder campaign right now, and she's fun, but I do miss that sweet divine power.)

BG3: Gale according to Gale
Oct. 29th, 2023 08:30 amSo Larissa doesn't have enough friendship points approval from Gale to unlock much conversation on Day 1, and he's the only one who didn't have anything to say at the end of the day, but she asked him about himself to round out the set anyway. I did figure this might be one of his favorite activities, lol.
Gale:
[Let's see. I hail from Waterdeep, the City of Splendours. I'm a wizard of considerable acclaim, and scholar of exceptional accomplishment.]
[Gale: I have a cat, a library, and a weakness for a good glass of wine. And if the mood takes me, I'm known to try my hand at poetry.]

(I'm pretty sure that Larissa, trying to take all this in, is like "Oh! What's your area of stud—wait, you have a CAT?!" /visibly jealous)
(Also, in the f!Gale AU, I think she simply assumes from this conversation that Gaila is a great poet, too. Gaila is great at everything, obviously!)
That's about all he's willing to say despite approving of Larissa more than anyone else in the party, but I don't think it'll take long for more. :D In any case, I continue to love him with zero irony.
(Oh, another also: Waterdeep is one of my favorite locations in Faerûn, so I appreciate how much he loves his giant decadent hometown.)

So the short version of my last f!Gale fic-sketching-out post is that Larissa saves Gaila per Tav canon, is attacked by Astarion per canon, and I think he inadvertently snaps the chain Larissa's Mystra holy symbol is on. It tumbles to the ground not far from Gaila, who immediately realizes the helpful cleric is a cleric of Mystra. For a wild moment, she longs to believe that it's not a coincidence and Mystra sent Larissa to her, ergo she still cares.
Anyway, I was sort of choreographing it in my mind and nailing down details. I think that when Astarion releases Larissa and agrees to join up, Gaila instinctively snatches up the holy symbol—Larissa's focus for drawing on divine power—and would feel the traces of Mystra's magic within it.
I think Gaila's fingers close around it and for a(nother) moment she desperately wants to keep it for herself. But instead, she forces herself to place it in Larissa's palm.
(Larissa has high enough wisdom to pick up the Gaila is reluctant to give it back to her, but she doesn't know why and assumes it's some wizard thing. I think it's also Gaila who supplies her with another chain to hang it on and helps her put it on again. She even keeps her hands steady, if barely.)

Oct. 24th, 2023 07:58 amI accidentally turned the camera while clicking on the cleric cantrip "Guidance" and the animation is kind of ridiculously cool-looking?
Not to under-sell Guidance, which is very handy, but it looks like you're going into the D&D Avatar State and not just adding 1d4 to ability checks.
Impressive for a cantrip!
(It was not purposeful, but ngl, it seems very apropos that it was Gale who happened to stay in the Mystra divine guidance magic circle.)

I am actively trying to stay away from any and all arguments about the BG3 characters. Really! But I'll get a like and be like, oh, the little pop up says they have cool fanart on their blog—and then it's like, yeah, they do, and also screeds about how Gale isn't really hubristic because Mystra blahblahblah.
I'm actually pretty sympathetic to fandom woobie treatment in general, and I love Gale a lot, but come on.

BG3: a NOTP, but a funny one

BG3: speaking of clerical magic...
Oct. 13th, 2023 11:42 amI was rambling the other day about Larissa experiencing channeling the Weave/Mystra via Gale, and how I headcanon that it would also be cool and probable for Gale to experience (or at least witness) Mystra's power simply being given as a personal favor to Larissa.
But then I realized, wait, that would have to happen, because Gale's a squishy wizard and Larissa is the main party healer.
We don't see it in game, of course, but ... at least in the Gaila fic, I totally imagine that the first time Gaila gets any significant injury, Larissa would rush over to be like, "oh, I can help you, let me just call on Mystra..."
