So Larissa doesn't have enough friendship points approval from Gale to unlock much conversation on Day 1, and he's the only one who didn't have anything to say at the end of the day, but she asked him about himself to round out the set anyway. I did figure this might be one of his favorite activities, lol.

Gale:

[Let's see. I hail from Waterdeep, the City of Splendours. I'm a wizard of considerable acclaim, and scholar of exceptional accomplishment.]

[Gale: I have a cat, a library, and a weakness for a good glass of wine. And if the mood takes me, I'm known to try my hand at poetry.]

afd;kjadfkad;j

(I'm pretty sure that Larissa, trying to take all this in, is like "Oh! What's your area of stud—wait, you have a CAT?!" /visibly jealous)

(Also, in the f!Gale AU, I think she simply assumes from this conversation that Gaila is a great poet, too. Gaila is great at everything, obviously!)

That's about all he's willing to say despite approving of Larissa more than anyone else in the party, but I don't think it'll take long for more. :D In any case, I continue to love him with zero irony.

(Oh, another also: Waterdeep is one of my favorite locations in Faerûn, so I appreciate how much he loves his giant decadent hometown.)

So the short version of my last f!Gale fic-sketching-out post is that Larissa saves Gaila per Tav canon, is attacked by Astarion per canon, and I think he inadvertently snaps the chain Larissa's Mystra holy symbol is on. It tumbles to the ground not far from Gaila, who immediately realizes the helpful cleric is a cleric of Mystra. For a wild moment, she longs to believe that it's not a coincidence and Mystra sent Larissa to her, ergo she still cares.

Anyway, I was sort of choreographing it in my mind and nailing down details. I think that when Astarion releases Larissa and agrees to join up, Gaila instinctively snatches up the holy symbol—Larissa's focus for drawing on divine power—and would feel the traces of Mystra's magic within it.

I think Gaila's fingers close around it and for a(nother) moment she desperately wants to keep it for herself. But instead, she forces herself to place it in Larissa's palm.

(Larissa has high enough wisdom to pick up the Gaila is reluctant to give it back to her, but she doesn't know why and assumes it's some wizard thing. I think it's also Gaila who supplies her with another chain to hang it on and helps her put it on again. She even keeps her hands steady, if barely.)

I was plotting out the early details of the f!Gale AU and had a kind of horrifying idea.

I have a very profound envy of people who can draw and also write fiction. I mean, shout out to you all, but !!!!!!!

#feel free to bring out the tiniest of violins lol #anyway if i could do both i'd probably just use each to procrastinate the other #i just ... it helps when i'm trying to figure things out in my head but i'm super uncoordinated #anywayyyyy

[ETA 10/22/2023: I still feel this! I'm poking at the f!Gale fic but I really want to draw her... RIP]

I got the screenshots of the two fantastic Gale interchanges ft. Astarion I really want in the Gaila fic:

I was rambling the other day about Larissa experiencing channeling the Weave/Mystra via Gale, and how I headcanon that it would also be cool and probable for Gale to experience (or at least witness) Mystra's power simply being given as a personal favor to Larissa.

But then I realized, wait, that would have to happen, because Gale's a squishy wizard and Larissa is the main party healer.

We don't see it in game, of course, but ... at least in the Gaila fic, I totally imagine that the first time Gaila gets any significant injury, Larissa would rush over to be like, "oh, I can help you, let me just call on Mystra..."

Gaila: call on who—
anghraine: a female half-elf armored cleric with dark hair partly cut at her chin holds a slightly glowing artifact (shadowheart (artefact))
I'm pretty sure that I won't replace Shadowheart with Astarion for the Larissa run, even though it would make for a much more well-rounded party (and he has many cool abilities, alas). It's just, a) I like Shadowheart a lot more than Astarion, b) I do like the cleric of Mystra-cleric of Shar dynamic between Larissa and Shadowheart, but mostly c) I'm massively entertained by Shadowheart/Lae'zel playing out in the background of the Gale/Larissa/Mystra drama.

I probably like Shadowheart/Karlach best of the non-Tav Shadowheart ships, but Shadowzel is very fun, and a scenario where it's the more functional and less dramatically disastrous relationship is just kind of delightful to me.

Since this game is providing the structure for the f!Gale/Gaila fic, I'm thinking that I'll pick up Shadowheart -> Gale -> Astarion, let Astarion stick around long enough for Gale to give him the very funny cold shoulder, then switch him out for Lae'zel for that A+ Shadowzel content. (I also love that this party make-up allows Larissa [14 INT] and Gaila [17 INT] to feel like they're holding the party's brain cells and just these normal, smart, stabilizing influences on everyone before they get consumed in their dubious life choices.)

anghraine: a female half-elf bg3 cleric holds her hand together, one glowing with divine light (larissa (glowing hand))
I'm trying to capture as many ambient conversations as possible in the reloads (RIP my hard drive space) specifically because I'm all the more charmed by Gaila's dynamic with the other party members and what Larissa (usually silent in-game) might say in them.

Like, there's that hilarious one where Astarion is trying to talk to Gale about how great it is, the two of them, walking in the beautiful forest together and Gale's like "Um, sure, if it's in silence." (Gale of all people giving anyone the cold shoulder is incredible, but doing it with Astarion was just ... lmao.) H/e Gaila doing it is somehow just 10x funnier to me.

Or there's that party-wide conversation about romance and sex, which I think was started by Wyll asking Lae'zel about love in my original game and carried on by Lae'zel going on about how love isn't real but sexual gratification is, and I think Gale had a more romantic take. But I really want to believe that there's some weird version in this scenario in which Gaila is like "and what about you, Larissa?" And Larissa, utterly devoid of swag as she is, would just be like "oh, it's fine, but personally I was never much interested in belonging with anyone but Mystra ... [slightly too long pause] Spiritually, that is."

BG3: >_>

I'm honestly glad that I hadn't thought of the f!Gale/cleric of Mystra(/Mystra) fic before I posted the "which genderbending fic should I write" poll, because I know it would have lost and I'd have desperately wanted to poke at it anyway. As it is, I'm working on Love, Pride & Delicacy (which I'm very fond of and knew would likely win!) while also feeling free to be like

anghraine: a bg3 female half-elf cleric with messy wavy hair and a serious expression (larissa (semi-profile))
Because I feel like it, basically. As I said in the post title, Gaila isn't even in this section—but Mystra feelings still are!

It feels like there should be a warning for the canonical opening of the BG3 story (though it's hard to imagine the fic being interesting to anyone without the context of the game), so, hmm, cw for canon body horror (but not the worst canon body horror...)

anghraine: a bg3 half-elf narrows her eyes doubtfully (larissa (thoughtful))
I decided I didn't want to just stick to Larissa's POV. So, here's a bit of Gaila:

Gaila half-fell out of the rune into open air and looked up as she got to her feet. Two half-elven women in chain mail blinked at her.

“Oof,” Gaila said, wincing. She dusted off her robes and tossed her hair back where it belonged. Her earrings jangled as she moved her head, so at least those were fine, too.

In a quick moment, she took in her rescuers. Clerics, hopefully—though very obviously of different deities, if so.

One of them, the shorter and more disheveled of the two, stood in front, eyeing Gaila with evident surprise. The second hung back, her expression neutral. Gaila herself was mostly startled that she didn’t recognize the symbols on the second woman’s armor, incorporating both swirls and pointed ends, along with dark stones set into her chest, shoulders, and a silvery hair piece. The stones didn’t appear arcane at all, yet absorbed the light near them in a peculiar way. A trick of the eye, perhaps. No doubt some iconography of a lesser deity than Gaila had ever troubled herself over.

BG3: ...

Apropos of this:

I know but...

She received no words in reply, no impression of Mystra’s face. Yet, as ever, she felt a flicker of peace—the peace that almost always accompanied Larissa’s prayers to her goddess, the sense of Mystra’s grace and crackling power. What did it mean? Was she going to be spared after all?

That hope died almost before it could form. The pod opened—the mind flayer looked down at her with its tiny orange eyes, tentacles writhing—the wriggling tadpole in its hand came nearer and nearer—

I am Larissa, priestess of Mystra, she thought desperately, as if her final memories might somehow remain to her after. I am forty-six years old, half-elven, a sage of the temple in Baldur’s Gate. I am—Mystra preserve me—

...anyway, going through the dialogue record now >_>
anghraine: a bg3 female half-elf looks upwards (at gale, offscreen) (larissa (with gale/mystra))
But I was doing this WIP meme on Tumblr and, in the meanwhile, my friend [personal profile] venndaai made a truly genius post about how they'd genderbend the various BG3 companions (when at all). And as soon as they mentioned f!Gale, I was like ... omg, the vision. F!Gale would be incredible! I love him but just imagine. (I was also genuinely surprised that I, of all people, hadn't yet considered this. I'm slacking.)

And then ... okay. I was pretty sure I wouldn’t be into writing BG3 fic. And I wasn’t. Even in the Larissa/Gale campaign, there was just … idk, something that made it not really a fic-style canon for me. But Larissa/f!Gale lit up my brain like New Year's Eve and, as I said on Tumblr, "well, I have to actually play the rest of the game, which is most of the game, and a longer piece would probably be in drawerfic territory anyway, but I’ve already played through one very shippy scene and………….."

This is a long prelude for my final excerpt for the WIP meme:
