I did another quest and got quite a bit more ambient dialogue from the party members! This is one of my favorite aspects of the game tbh, though it tragically wasn't Shadowheart and Lae'zel this time. But Gale decided his scholarly curiosity about approximately everything should encompass the githyanki.

BG3: meanwhile-
Oct. 11th, 2023 10:18 amI'm pretty sure that I won't replace Shadowheart with Astarion for the Larissa run, even though it would make for a much more well-rounded party (and he has many cool abilities, alas). It's just, a) I like Shadowheart a lot more than Astarion, b) I do like the cleric of Mystra-cleric of Shar dynamic between Larissa and Shadowheart, but mostly c) I'm massively entertained by Shadowheart/Lae'zel playing out in the background of the Gale/Larissa/Mystra drama.
I probably like Shadowheart/Karlach best of the non-Tav Shadowheart ships, but Shadowzel is very fun, and a scenario where it's the more functional and less dramatically disastrous relationship is just kind of delightful to me.
Since this game is providing the structure for the f!Gale/Gaila fic, I'm thinking that I'll pick up Shadowheart -> Gale -> Astarion, let Astarion stick around long enough for Gale to give him the very funny cold shoulder, then switch him out for Lae'zel for that A+ Shadowzel content. (I also love that this party make-up allows Larissa [14 INT] and Gaila [17 INT] to feel like they're holding the party's brain cells and just these normal, smart, stabilizing influences on everyone before they get consumed in their dubious life choices.)

I'm trying to capture as many ambient conversations as possible in the reloads (RIP my hard drive space) specifically because I'm all the more charmed by Gaila's dynamic with the other party members and what Larissa (usually silent in-game) might say in them.
Like, there's that hilarious one where Astarion is trying to talk to Gale about how great it is, the two of them, walking in the beautiful forest together and Gale's like "Um, sure, if it's in silence." (Gale of all people giving anyone the cold shoulder is incredible, but doing it with Astarion was just ... lmao.) H/e Gaila doing it is somehow just 10x funnier to me.
Or there's that party-wide conversation about romance and sex, which I think was started by Wyll asking Lae'zel about love in my original game and carried on by Lae'zel going on about how love isn't real but sexual gratification is, and I think Gale had a more romantic take. But I really want to believe that there's some weird version in this scenario in which Gaila is like "and what about you, Larissa?" And Larissa, utterly devoid of swag as she is, would just be like "oh, it's fine, but personally I was never much interested in belonging with anyone but Mystra ... [slightly too long pause] Spiritually, that is."

BG3: a sudden Lae'zel appears!
Oct. 10th, 2023 12:04 pmShadowheart and Gale are my favorite party members by a mile, but that said, my favorite party member introduction is unquestionably Lae'zel's. I just went back and replayed it for shits and giggles (my many saved games assist in this) and it's just like

—the idea came to me that the difficulties facing my cleric-cleric-wizard-fighter party could perhaps be pretty easily resolved by doing the unthinkable and ... replacing Shadowheart with Astarion. It's probably a good idea, and it's not like Larissa was ever going to romance Shadowheart or anything (L only has eyes for Mystra and Gale, lmao).
Downsides:
+losing Shadowheart!!!
+specifically losing the Shadowheart-Lae'zel chatter
+losing the cleric-cleric dynamic
+enduring Astarion in two games >_>
Upsides:
+having a rogue with all that entails (fantastic sleight of hand, sneak attack...)
+more mechanically balanced party
+Gale and Larissa being the only nice people in the party could be pretty funny

BG3: Shadowheart and Lae'zel 2.0
Sep. 16th, 2023 07:41 amIf I didn't know how cool Karlach was, I might almost regret my plan of replacing Lae'zel with her. I don't like Lae'zel nearly as much, but I do kind of love the Shadowheart-Lae'zel dynamic in the PC!Shadowheart game.

BG3: gaming hypocrisy(?)
Sep. 15th, 2023 12:57 pmI decided to give you all Larissa a break from the Gale romance for a bit, but I'm also basically waiting for my Tumblr poll results to come in and determine Ilzara's final class. But I also needed to blow a few hours at my university while I wait for a friend to pick me up and was like ... oh yeah, I had a Shadowheart game!
This isn't a game romancing her, but playing as her—although I like several of the origin characters, she's the only one I ever considered actually playing, until I got carried away by custom character altitis. I'd even decided she'd romance Karlach. But I saved on the nautiloid and that was it, basically.
The nautiloid isn't hard, you say? Wellllllll. I assure you, it can be if you're ambitious enough!

BG3: Shadowheart and Lae'zel
Sep. 13th, 2023 04:43 pmI didn't really see the appeal of Shadowheart/Lae'zel at first, and I still wouldn't actually play that specific romance, but the more time goes by, the more I see where people are coming from.

BG3 variant: background noise
Sep. 2nd, 2023 03:49 pmSo I'm experiencing Mass Effect 3 via my best friend's playthrough, and sometimes play a game on my own computer in the background, but it has to be one that doesn't take total concentration. Normally, that would not be BG3, but I have no Internet and figured I'd try a new game with the most conventional party make-up: rogue, cleric, wizard, fighter. I'm playing the rogue to avoid bringing Astarion along (Ilzara will be an arcane trickster to feel like she has commonalities with her romancee for this one, Gale, and I bumped up Ilzara's intelligence to 16 and gave her the sage background to that purpose). And she's a cool, pretty Seldarine drow.
In some ways, it's working more smoothly than the absurd spellcaster team (paladin-cleric-wizard-warlock). But lol, I've already managed to tank Lae'zel's approval back down to 0. I think I'm just going to replace her with Karlach when I get to her. Gale and Shadowheart like me, though :)
