anghraine: kuvira from legend of korra (kuvira (face))
I reblogged art by nikkipet of young Korra in the Spirit World holding her hand out to an equally-young Kuvira. I tagged it:

#i would have committed murder for a tiny korra and kuvira spirit world adventure

arsonlupin replied:

Murder is easier than writing it ourselves, yeah

I responded:

It’s true! I’ve thought about it since the B4 finale aired—it’s easy to imagine Kuvira stumbling off when she jumps away from Korra, getting lost in the Spirit World, and freaking out enough to revert to tiny!Kuvira, but it also works for B2 AUs where Kuvira is around for reasons and gets pulled into the Spirit World with Korra, and they’re both small troubled kids having character-building adventures. And probably other AUs too!

I just … haven’t written any. >_>

#the flesh is indeed weak #i've been trying to figure out a way for it to work in the final boss amon au and it doesn't really #except if you change the ending of canon b3 #which kinda makes sense since it's so abrupt but doesn't have a lot of justification #the rearrangement au works a lot better for this specifically but i'm kind of feeling the amon au more rn... idk...

In the academia AU, I was definitely imagining that Korra realizes her feelings first, while Kuvira is wrapping up her "why do my relationships with men always turn out so badly?!" phase (in all universes, Korra is bi and Kuvira is lesbian).

In the Rearrangement/Final Boss Amon AUs, though, I'm definitely imagining that Kuvira falls like a ton of bricks for Korra and knows it relatively soon (Rearrangement: probably soon after their Spirit World adventures). She sees no point and suppresses her feelings—at first successfully, but ... well. Everyone was, naturally, super suspicious of her at first (even with her exploits scaled down), but her behaviour is so contrary to what they expect that they're kind of ??? about her. Some of them think it's a plot, but eventually almost everyone suspects the truth because it's hard to make sense of Kuvira's behaviour otherwise. So when Korra finally realizes that Kuvira is in love with her (either because it clicks at last or because a situation arises where she's told enough), the others are just like "yes, and...?"

I'm just imagining that Korra's like... wait, you KNEW?
Mako: Yes?
Korra: !!!!?!
Mako: I mean ... yeah, I knew. And Bolin knew. And Asami. And ... uh, everyone.
Korra: I'm the only one who didn't know?
Mako: Well, you and Tenzin.

OTOH, nobody knows what Korra feels—including Korra herself for a while, and definitely including Kuvira.

(This post isn't going anywhere, it's just a Korvira feelings overflow!)

I was thinking of the Final Boss Amon AU vs the Rearrangement AU, and while I do like the former for a lot of reasons, there are various issues that have reminded me of why I liked the Rearrangement AU so much.

Brief run-down: Final Boss organizes the seasons by starting in the South Pole and getting Unavaatu out of the way first, but following the canonical sequence apart from that (Zaheer -> Kuvira -> Amon). OTOH, the Rearrangement organizes them by ascending villain threat—according to me!—starting with Zaheer et al (giving Air an airbending villain), rising to Amon and the Equalists, Kuvira and the Earth Empire, and finally Vaatu.

Very rambly, but )

I'm thinking some more about the Final Boss Amon AU and trying to figure out the details, and it's occurred to me that the main difficulty on the Korvira front is getting Kuvira and Korra in the same place during the B1 plot at all.

Two ideas sprang to mind:

Speaking of Korvira AUs, I once had this concept for a LOK AU that would (basically) rearrange the seasons by villain threat: Zaheer(+Red Lotus) -> Amon(+Equalists) -> Kuvira(+armies) -> Unavaatu. I came up with a bunch of ideas for how to make the smaller pieces hang together. And I still think about it and really enjoy the idea.

But I read somewhere that the original, or at least earlier, conception was that Amon would be the final villain. And I really like that idea for an AU, too! I think in a lot of ways he’s the most terrifying and well-executed of them all, even if there are flaws in the over-arching narrative—and a lot of those flaws could be ameliorated by being developed over a longer span of time.
