Why the villains of Legend of Korra matter
Apr. 7th, 2024 10:50 pmMy best friend and I were talking about the ways that Legend of Korra does and doesn't work for us, and particularly about the way it feels very erratic on a craft level where ATLA is pretty consistently good to great, yet ultimately LOK engages us both more. Inevitably, we wound around to a point of firm agreement: excepting Unalaq and Vaatu in B2, we consider the main villains of LOK a lot more personally and thematically interesting than Ozai and this has a weird effect on LOK's politics.
I drafted a far longer post about this [ETA: lmao], but anyway: there are many obviously progressive elements to ATLA. Ozai as a villain is fundamentally aligned with things antithetical to progressive ideals. He is a hereditary autocrat carrying on a multi-generational campaign of imperialism that historically (in the show) has been justified by familiar bigoted, reactionary rationales about civilizing and bringing prosperity to other cultures. He's overwhelmingly authoritarian in every aspect of life—as a ruler, as a conqueror, as a father, as a husband. He's less a person than an embodiment of domination, imperialism, autocracy. And the ultimate solution that ATLA provides for the problem of Ozai is 1) a greater power defeating him in combat and 2) replacing him with a good autocrat.
That's not a charitable characterization of a beautifully executed and emotionally satisfying conclusion. And I think the underlying rationale for that resolution owes more to ATLA's mythic and fantastic structure than to any serious commitment to the "what we really need is a good dictator" form of political discourse that has unfortunately become increasingly common. But solving the problem of imperialism with a Chosen One and a kinder and softer absolute ruler over the imperialists is not ... exactly a radical solution, let's say. It's not that different from, say, Lord of the Rings.
It works for ATLA's story! I just don't feel that this resolution is particularly daring or transgressive in the way that it is sometimes represented as being. Other aspects of ATLA are much more daring and revolutionary than this, but the core politics just don't feel that way to me.
LOK, by contrast, has a lot of centrist-at-best baggage. It would take awhile to detail all of this (the fantasy copaganda is probably the most obvious), but it's especially apparent with the villains. LOK essentially has a revolving door of major villains who are each very different in personality, goals, motives, politics, and symbolic alignments, but thematically unified by one very familiar concept that is obvious even before it's explicitly spelled out in B4.
I've talked about this before in relation to LOK and had plenty of criticism of it (here and here), but the basic idea is this: What if the villain actually has the right idea, but just goes too far?

Feb. 28th, 2024 03:53 pmLike: AU Unalaq can be both spiritual and politically ambitious without being in league with Vaatu / plotting to replace the Avatar. He’s plotting to influence the Avatar. AU Kuvira can be focused on welding the Earth Kingdom back together while keeping it from being reduced to a puppet state, without the escalation to spirit vines/invasion of RC/etc.
AU Amon is … less indiscriminate, I guess? AU Zaheer is … not murdering people …?
OTOH, fully non-villainous versions: Noatak is an activist ally to non-benders, Zaheer and Unalaq are benevolent spiritual guides of different kinds, while Kuvira is an advocate for Earth Kingdom leadership and autonomy.
Tagged: #idk maybe it's just because i fundamentally can see unalaq and (esp) kuvira taking a middle ground in other circumstances #between heroism and villainy #but it's much harder with noatak and zaheer #then again it's kind of... unalaq and kuvira are introduced as fairly positive figures and are revealed to be menaces #amon and zaheer are /introduced/ as highly dangerous and threatening so you can't just chop off the excess bits #at least not as easily #hmm #hmmmmm

Yeah—it’s not necessary to have an overarching plot, strictly speaking, but I think there are places where it would have helped to be building towards something the whole time, even if it wasn’t apparent what that thing was until we got there/in retrospect. I do love Korra’s overall character arc, but it bears a lot of weight as pretty much the only thing holding the series together as a whole.
I do think books 3 and 4 flow together a lot better than 1 and 2 or even 2 and 3 (not to argue that they’re individually better, just that B3 very clearly leads into B4 across multiple levels), but as far as Kuvira specifically goes, I agree. Her descent would be much more powerful if we actually knew her in some capacity, as would her ultimate surrender, but there’s no real connection to her until B4.

Her primary function is as a villainous version of Korra through whom Korra’s issues can be processed—hence Korra hallucinating Kuvira as herself, for instance. This IMO is the main reason why taking compassion on Kuvira is so important as the culmination of Korra’s character arc; Kuvira represents Korra at both her worst and her most vulnerable, so Korra taking compassion on her is intrinsically tied to taking compassion on herself. This is why Kuvira is Final Boss, much more than because of the threat that Kuvira poses.
At the same time … well, someone on FFA said Kuvira got beaten by the villain stick to make the story work, and I do kind of agree. Sometimes what we get in Kuvira is “how would a dark Korra become more extreme?” and sometimes it’s “how would a military dictator become more extreme?” So you get really weird things like the camps and the giant mecha laser thing that don’t fit with the dark!Korra theme, or seem to follow from the basic characterization, but rather from the function Kuvira is fulfilling as an ideological representative who goes Too Far.
Like—if you’re going to try and weld “dark Korra” and “military dictator” together, IMO it would help to build up to it! There’s a lot we just don’t know about Kuvira or only get the merest scraps of (contrast Amon, who gets a highlight reel of his entire childhood that explains a lot). If there was more time and space given to her descent into villainy that actually tied in her parallels with Korra, I think the different elements would feel less abrupt and disconnected.
Of course, it would require a lot more continuity between the seasons than really exists. But I do think it’s a good idea, yes.

Feb. 27th, 2024 07:20 pmI was talking the other day about a LOK AU where Amon is the final boss, and mentioned that it’s a variant on a much older idea I had for rearranging the order of the seasons. And now I’m thinking of that one again.
I have a few pretty long posts about it, but in summary, this other AU reorders the seasons by the threat posed by the villains and their forces (in my judgment): Zaheer, Amon, Kuvira, and Vaatu. It always seemed a bit odd to me to have the most high-stakes battle (against Vaatu) in the middle of the series and then to follow it right up with a handful of anarchists, while the most truly menacing villain starts out the series, and the last has a very abrupt and incomplete arc.
It’s not … entirely motivated by Kuvira/Korvira feelings. I do think that, while complicated to carry off in details, it could help with a lot of the pacing issues, and though it’s a coincidence, I like the idea of the seasons continuing to follow the elemental cycle (the Air season would have an airbender villain fighting for freedom, who would be followed by a waterbender villain fighting for change, who would be followed by an earthbender fighting for stability).
Buuuut can’t lie, giving Kuvira’s arc more space is a major motivator. She’d first show up in Book One, if briefly, be an occasional presence in Book Two as she reports her progress in consolidating control of the Earth Kingdom while Korra is trying to deal with Amon … but with Zaheer coming first, Korra would be in a mental state to deal with Kuvira much earlier in the timeline, preventing some of her later excesses (*cough*and making it easier to accept a redemption arc*cough*).
Anyway, I’m still really attached to the scenario where—although Kuvira’s exploits as the Great Uniter weren’t on the same scale as canon—the non-Korra members of Team Avatar are pretty understandably suspicious of her (esp Mako), and she and Korra amplify each other’s best and worst tendencies so much that she’s definitely disruptive, but they all end up fighting Team Unavaatu together.
(After Korra and Kuvira have shippy adventures in the Spirit World, that is.)

I’ve thought about it since the B4 finale aired—it’s easy to imagine Kuvira stumbling off when she jumps away from Korra, getting lost in the Spirit World, and freaking out enough to revert to tiny!Kuvira, but it also works for B2 AUs where Kuvira is around for reasons and gets pulled into the Spirit World with Korra, and they’re both small troubled kids having character-building adventures. And probably other AUs too!

Feb. 5th, 2024 01:34 pmI chose “I always get what I want” as one of Kuvira’s badass quotes for the handwriting meme, but the more I think about it, the more it seems … just manifestly untrue.
Kuvira’s most formative experience is getting abandoned by her parents as a child—something that very obviously screwed her up into adulthood. She certainly didn’t get what she wanted then.
Su picked her up at some point and says she thought of Kuvira as a daughter, but it seems more of a turn of phrase than literal reality. Kuvira isn’t at the family dinner or in any of the family photographs or anything like that. It’s not like Su was obligated to fully adopt Kuvira, but it does seem like Kuvira wanted more from her than she got.
Kuvira also wanted Su/Zaofu to act to pick up the pieces of the Earth Kingdom, which of course didn’t happen. Kuvira wanted the Beifongs to accept her engagement to Baatar. Nope. She wanted to make herself and her people invulnerable and ultimately fails.
It’s not that Kuvira doesn’t get a lot of things she wants, many of them reprehensible (she’s thrilled to seize Zaofu, lol). But ultimately, those are kind of surface-level? They’re not what she really wants. So there’s this mix of confidence in going after anything she wants, and inability to acknowledge that she doesn’t have what she actually wants and never has, because—as Korra notes—she’s so afraid at that point.
I’m not sure where this is going and she still does many awful things etc etc etc. But … welcome to angsting over sad villains: the life, the blog.

1. Sexuality Headcanon: confused lesbian! I mean, she could be bi and my OTP could work, but she just reads as very gay to me.

3. BROTP: I don’t really have one, though I do have feelings about Kuvira’s relationship with Su.
4. NOTP: Baatar/Kuvira. Even before I shipped Korvira, I thought it seemed weirdly … off. These days, it is my conviction that Kuvira’s interest is pretty much confined to his usefulness, the remnants of friendship, and, subconsciously, the feeling that he’d make her Su’s daughter For Real.
5. First headcanon that pops into my head: This is an old one, but I imagined back in the day that “Kuvira” wasn’t actually her birth name, but one that Su helped her choose for herself.

7. One way in which I relate to this character: It’s silly, but: eyebrows! Mine are also quite strong.
8. Thing that gives me second-hand embarrassment about this character: the really weird episode with the camps. Why on earth is she recruiting random people and also putting random people away for no reason??? (I mean, to give Bolin a heroic episode, but …)

In a weird way, it’s easier for me to imagine a long-term relationship than a short-term one? I can’t see either of them doing anything casually, and I feel like they wouldn’t be able to get into a relationship at all until Kuvira has done a LOT of work on herself.

In a weird way, it’s easier for me to imagine a long-term relationship than a short-term one? I can’t see either of them doing anything casually, and I feel like they wouldn’t be able to get into a relationship at all until Kuvira has done a LOT of work on herself.
