I saw D:OS2 described as “grimdark” by a few people, and I was genuinely taken aback even though, thinking about it, it is a pretty grim setting full of terrible people, and you can be one of them if you so choose.

But … it just doesn’t feel that way to me? Maybe because you have the option to play the origin characters as much nicer than ‘standard,’ and maybe because I generally stick to the nicer ones like Lohse and Ifan in the first place. (The Red Prince can die in a fire.) And, while there are a lot of terrible people, there are a lot of semi- and actually decent ones, too.

But also, I suspect it’s kind of like revenge tragedy—I don’t generally care for tragedy, but I love revenge tragedies, because I enjoy the sheer excess and loud personalities and can’t take the misery too seriously. It’s not exactly silly; I do get caught up in what’s happening and attached to many of the characters. But by and large, revenge tragedies are having too much fun to really feel grim.

And Divinity is kind of like that for me. There’s a lot that’s tragic and terrible going on, but it’s just … fun.

I really love Divinity: Original Sin 2, but I suspect part of that is that you can play the origin characters as much less obnoxious than they are as companions.

My first game was with Lohse as the PC + Ifan, Sebille, and Fane, and they made for a pretty fun quartet, with Ifan particularly endearing (aided by his A+ voice actor). OTOH, I tried a game as Sebille, and enjoyed making her less Dark and Edgy, but figured I'd mix it up by replacing Fane with the Red Prince. Turns out the Red Prince is super annoying (I mostly chose him to see how he and Sebille would get along). And Lohse, who I'm very fond of as the PC, is also kind of irritating as a companion. So now I'm trying something a little different: Lohse as the PC + my fave Ifan as companion and just running them as Lone Wolves(heh). So far I'm aiming for a somewhat ~edgier~ Lohse than I usually play her, but still essentially good-hearted and remaining in Ifan's good graces. And it's super fun!

IDK, the game has its issues, but I just really enjoy it and hope that BG3 is roughly similar.

I picked up Divinity:OS 2 again—I’ve never quite finished the Definitive Edition, and I forgot just how much I like it! And I finally got Lohse and Sebille to declare their love <3
