- it is said here that he and his brother Elrond were not differently endowed in the physical potential of life, but that since Elros elected to remain among the kindred of Men he retained the chief characteristic of Men as opposed to the Quendi: the “seeking else-whither,” as the Eldar called it, the “weariness” or desire to depart from the world. (UT)

Thus (as the Eldar) they grew at much the same rate as other Men, but when they had achieved “full-growth” they then aged, or “wore out,” very much more slowly. The first approach of “world-weariness” was indeed for them a sign that their period of vigour was nearing its end. When it came to an end, if they persisted in living, then decay would proceed (UT)

his [Denethor’s] appearance of premature old age, first observable when he was not much above sixty years old (UT); he bought the knowledge dearly, being aged before his time (Appendix A)

Legolas looked at him and bowed low; for he saw that here indeed was one [Imrahil “the Fair” of Dol Amroth] who had elven-blood in his veins.

‘…That is a fair lord and a great captain of men,’ said Legolas. ‘If Gondor has such men still in these days of fading, great must have been its glory in the days of its rising.’ (ROTK)

She [Finduilas of Dol Amroth, sister to Imrahil] was a lady of great beauty and gentle heart, but before twelve years had passed she died. […S]he withered in the guarded city, as a flower of the seaward vales set upon a barren rock. The shadow in the east filled her with horror, and she turned her eyes ever south to the sea… (Appendix A)

- ‘I [Legolas] heard them [seagulls] crying in the air as we rode to the battle of the ships. Then I stood still, forgetting war in Middle-earth; for their wailing voices spoke to me of the Sea. The Sea! Alas! I have not yet beheld it. But deep in the hearts of all my kindred lies the sea-longing, which it is perilous to stir. Alas! for the gulls. No peace shall I have again…’ (ROTK)

among the last writings of my father’s on the subject of Middle-earth, there is a discussion of the Elvish strain in Men, as to its being observable in the beardlessness of those who were so descended (it was a characteristic of all Elves to be beardless) (Unfinished Tales, p. 247-48)

Very tall he [Círdan] was, and his beard was long, and he was grey and old (ROTK)

‘yet you have endured perils and seen marvels that few of our greybeards could boast of.’ (Beregond, ROTK)

he was called among Men of the North Gandalf, “the Elf of the Wand”. For they deemed him (though in error, as has been said) to be of Elven-kind(UT; Gandalf is bearded)

- A note elsewhere in the papers associated with this essay reads: “Elves did not have beards until they entered their third cycle of life. Nerdanel’s father [Cf. XII:365-66 n.61] was exceptional, being only early in his second.(Vinyar Tengwar)

- ‘Would that Elrond were here, for he is the eldest of all our race, and has the greater power.’ (Aragorn, ROTK)

- Elladan might be translated ‘Elf-Númenórean’ (Letters of JRR Tolkien, p. 282)

They [the Númenóreans] became thus in appearance, and even in powers of mind, hardly distinguishable from the Elves (Letters, p. 154)

- ‘They [Elladan and Elrohir] are fair and gallant as Elf-lords’ (ROTK)

Then more than any kind of Men he [Aragorn] appeared, and seemed rather an Elf-lord from the Isles of the West (Appendix A)

- [Pippin] was reminded not so much of Boromir as Aragorn (Denethor, ROTK)

He [Denethor] was very tall and in appearance looked like an ancient Númenórean (POME); Indeed he [Denethor] was as like to Thorongil [Aragorn] as to one of nearest kin (Appendix A); Denethor looked indeed much more like a great wizard than Gandalf did, more kingly, beautiful, and powerful (ROTK)

And with that word she [Galadriel] held them with her eyes, and in silence looked searchingly at each of them in turn. None save Legolas and Aragorn could long endure her glance (FOTR)

- ‘Look at me! Do you know the name of this place? Have you been here before?’

Slowly Gollum raised his eyes and looked unwillingly into Faramir’s. All light went out of them, and they stared bleak and pale for a moment into the clear unwavering eyes of the man of Gondor. There was a still silence. Then Gollum dropped his head and shrank down…

‘There are locked doors and closed windows in your mind, and dark rooms behind them,’ said Faramir. (TTT)

‘She [Galadriel] seemed to be looking inside me … maybe it was only a test, and she thought to read our thoughts (FOTR)

- ‘He [Denethor] has long sight. He can perceive, if he bends his will thither, much of what is passing in the minds of men, even of those who dwell far off. It is difficult to deceive him, and dangerous to try. (ROTK)

‘Is not that its name?’ said Faramir turning to him.

‘No!’ said Gollum, and then he squealed, as if something had stabbed him. (TTT)

Aragorn said naught in answer, but he took the other’s eye and held it, and for a moment they strove thus; but soon, though Aragorn did not stir nor move hand to weapon, the other [the Mouth of Sauron, a Black Númenórean] quailed and gave back as if menaced with a blow. ‘I am a herald and ambassador, and may not be assailed!’ he cried. (ROTK)

- ‘He has done murder before. I [Faramir] read it in him.’ (TTT)

For they [Elrond, Galadriel, Celeborn, Gandalf] did not move or speak with mouth, looking from mind to mind; and their shining eyes stirred and kindled as their thoughts went to and fro (ROTK)

- ‘I [Faramir] do not think you are holden to go to Cirith Ungol, of which he has told you less than he knows. That much I perceived clearly in his mind.’ (TTT)

He [Denethor] turned his dark eyes on Gandalf, and now Pippin saw a likeness between the two, and he felt the strain between them, almost as if he saw a line of smouldering fire, drawn from eye to eye. […H]e saw that Denethor and Gandalf still looked each other in the eye, as if reading the other’s mind (ROTK)

‘But I can say this: you [Faramir] have an air too, sir, that reminds me of, of–well, of Gandalf, of wizards.’ (TTT)

- ‘I hope that it may be long before you find yourself in such a tight corner again between two such terrible old men [Gandalf and Denethor].’ (ROTK)

For a moment the eyes of Denethor glowed again as he faced Gandalf, and Pippin felt once more the strain between their wills; but now almost it seemed as if they glances were like blades from eye to eye, flickering as they fenced. Pippin trembled fearing some dreadful stroke. (ROTK)

Now Aragorn knelt before Faramir, and held a hand upon his brow. And those that watched felt that some great struggle was going on. For Aragorn’s face grew grey with weariness; and ever and anon he called the name of Faramir, but each time more faintly to their hearing, as if Aragorn himself was removed from them, and walked afar in some dark vale, calling for one that was lost.

…Suddenly Faramir stirred, and he opened his eyes, and he looked on Aragorn who bent over him; and a light of knowledge and love was kindled in his eyes, and he spoke softly. ‘My lord, you called me.’ (ROTK)

There was not a heart among them that did not quail, unless it were the heart of Legolas of the Elves, for whom the dead have no terror (ROTK; Elladan and Elrohir are present)

- They [the Nazgûl] still flew high and out of sight of all save Legolas(ROTK; Elladan and Elrohir are present)

- He was the Lord of Rivendell and mighty among both Elves and Men (FOTR; Elrond)
