anghraine: choppy water on a misty day (sea)
argh, giving in

Faramir was born under the Shadow, son of a weary father and wearier mother.

Still, they welcomed him with joy, stroking his black hair and smiling at his tiny hands and features. He looked almost exactly like Boromir had, down to the clear grey eyes they shared with their mother, though Finduilas thought his screams might be even louder. Denethor laughed when she said it, startling even himself.

In that moment, the memory of clean wind on her face, the sounds of waves intermingled with harps or the neighing of horses, did not haunt her. Nor did it leave her; indeed, it felt nearer than usual, as if she would see the castle of her birth rather than Mordor if she rose from her bed and looked east. It might only be a moment’s fancy, but it left an impression on her, a sense that this son, born for war in a grim fortress, would be a child of the sea, too.

I reblogged this post and added:

I’m imagining a version of Gondor that actually leaned hard into the Byzantine aesthetic and just … *sigh*

I reblogged this 2018 post—

  1. King Turambar
  2. Steward Húrin I
  3. Steward Túrin I
  4. Lady Rían, daughter of the Steward Barahir
  5. Steward Húrin II
  6. Steward Orodreth, son of the Steward Belecthor I
  7. Lady Morwen, daughter of Belecthor I
  8. Steward Túrin II
  9. Morwen of Lossarnach, descendant of a Prince of Dol Amroth
  10. Ivriniel of Dol Amroth
  11. Finduilas of Dol Amroth
—and added:

Gondor is Narn stanning central tbh

me: I really need to work on my exams

also me: so was Adrahil of Dol Amroth a Narn fan in general, or a Finduilas stan in particular?

(I still think about him naming his firstborn "Ivriniel" and then going "hmm...Finduilas" for the second and laugh.)

While I’m at it, Lothíriel headcanons:
  • Physically, she bears a strong resemblance to her father and her aunt Finduilas, but differs quite a lot in personality—in particular, she’s much more straightforward and assertive, within the bounds of what she considers proper conduct
  • She’s bi and aro
  • She’s proudly Dúnadan and resists assimilation into Eorling norms, instead maintaining Gondorian customs and habits in her personal conduct/court, which doesn’t always go over well
  • Like several others in her family, she has a vaguely preternatural command over horses that makes her a fearless rider, which does go over well

captainwordsmith replied to this post:

So the name means something like ‘Jewel of the Shore’ if memory serves.

I replied:

Yes. His mother came from the seashore and “turned her eyes ever south to the sea that she missed,” so it makes sense (eta: not that a name needs to have a direct etymological significance, but in this case it does fit the circumstance).

I reblogged this post about Faramir's name and added:

Your regularly scheduled reminder that "Faramir's name means 'sufficient' because Denethor is Just That Awful" is not, in fact, canon.

(We hates it forever, precious! But honestly, it's like ... OKAY. If you're going to assume that Denethor was the one who named Faramir and the name was chosen for etymological meaning, then it's more likely that Denethor went 'I think we should name the baby for the seashore,' which in the context of who Finduilas was and how she felt is honestly sweet. And yet in our year 2020, I've got 'oh, Denethor always thought Faramir would only be sufficient, he is Just That Awful' on my dash. /seethes forever)

In relation to the previous post, an anon said:

you, smart: faramir's name means jewel of the shore, a reference to his mother's home, dol amroth
me, stupid: FARAMIR'S NAME MEANS PEARL AND THAT'S FACTS

I replied:

Hah! When I was cropping the lexicon entries, I actually had the stray thought lol literally shore-jewel would have to be … like, pearl. But I stand by my headcanon that in this case it was for Finduilas!

It would be pretty cute if Faramir Took was named for both the Steward of Gondor and Aunt Pearl, though.

People are still constantly going on about how Faramir's name means 'sufficient jewel' lol Denethor, and aghhhhhh

(Note: a) Faramir is a pre-existing royal name, and b) Faramir's mother was the daughter/sister of the great Princes of Dol Amroth on the coast, and longed for the sea of her home.)

So, I've been trying to hunt down decent Denethor/Finduilas fics.

It's an interesting pairing.  Even apart from being my favourite character's parents, and even given how little we know about them (together, that is -- there's actually quite a lot about Denethor himself), there's something about them that interests me.  On the one hand, you have Imrahil's gentle, wistful sister (if she seriously died from longing for the sea, he's not the only Really Obvious Throwback in their family), and on the other hand you have ... Denethor.  The man who uses chainmail for pyjamas.  At eighty-nine.

Besides, the craziness of Gondorian politics gives me warm fuzzy feelings, and the whole affair winds itself out in my favourite period in my favourite Middle-earth culture.  So I went looking for fic.  Some was good and most was horrifically bad (abusive!Denethor MAKES NO SENSE).  A few, like this one, left me so ambivalent that I can't even say whether it's good or not.  But there's a certain assumption common to them all.

Ecthelion was composed of purest evil.
