anghraine: jyn erso and cassian andor unnecessarily cooperating to bypass security with an imperial officer's hand (jyn and cassian [one-person job])
An anon asked:

firiel anon here. You write rebelcaptain too???? My god you’re just tackling all of my favorite ships... back to AO3 I go!

I replied:

I do! I wrote nearly 100k of a fic where Jyn, Cassian, and Bodhi escape Scarif and Jyn and Cassian fall (more) in love, and also … uh, around 18 others. The only ship I’ve written more for is Darcy/Elizabeth :)

Thanks!

title: per ardua ad astra (23/?)
verse: Death Star
characters: Jyn Erso, Cassian Andor, Luke Skywalker, Davits Draven, Leia Organa, Han Solo; Bodhi Rook, Commander Willard, OCs—Lieutenant Graves and an operator; Jyn/Cassian, implied Han/Leia
stuff that happens: I return to this fic after five years The Falcon reaches its destination!
previous chapters: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, twenty, twenty-one, twenty-two

After the battle of Scarif, some in the Alliance had celebrated. It was proof that the Empire could be challenged on its own territory—outwitted, outmaneuvered, even beaten in some sense. Davits Draven saw no purpose in discouraging the fervor of those who remained.

But the victory, if it could even be called that, had come at a horrifically steep price.

I shocked myself by actually finishing the chapter of per ardua ad astra that's been moldering in GoogleDocs for ~5 years. And revising it! And posting it at AO3! If you're (...still) reading it, the new chapter is here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/9223013/chapters/119508970

I’ve ranted before about how much I dislike the idea that the Rogue One team’s deaths are mandated by continuity, given that 1) we only ever see the Rebellion in glimpses, with new-yet-longstanding leaders appearing with every movie, and 2) they’re spies.

But I think I’m even more :| at the idea that it was mandated by their in-story characters. That is, that the Scarif mission is about as good as it was ever going to get for them, and they’re too troubled/unconventional/traumatized/rootless/whatever to find any real peace or happiness in living. Dying in triumph and hope was really the kindest end for them. Et cetera.

So, it's this year's Rebelcaptain Week at Tumblr, and this time I've actually managed to get my ficlets posted on time! And they're all for storm in the desert, so:

title: like a storm in the desert (2/4???)
verse: everybody lives and are more or less happy, fight me
characters: Cassian Andor, Jyn Erso; Baze Malbus, Bodhi Rook, General Draven, Mon Mothma; Jyn/Cassian
stuff that happens: General Draven and Jyn have their inevitable stand-off, Draven and Cassian have one of a different tenor, and Jyn and Cassian reach an important consensus.
chapters: one

“And if we succeed?”

The curl of Draven’s lip approximated a smile. “Then you all can enjoy your promotions.”

He turned to leave, apparently considering that adequate.

“I haven’t even joined the Rebellion,” Jyn protested. It was certainly not adequate.

“You have now,” said Draven.

stuff that happens: Feelings are had as Jyn, Cassian, Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie, and Bodhi escape the Death Star at last.
previous chapters: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, twenty, twenty-one

“There are still two more of them out there!”

“They’re going to swerve back, make a lateral shot,” said Bodhi, and Chewbacca managed to evade the strike.

“So,” Luke whispered to Jyn, “do you know if the Rebellion has much in the way of credits? I sort of promised Han a huge reward for helping the princess escape.”

“Sort of?” said Jyn.

This is the latest chapter of ad astra! I am finally caught up :D

title: per ardua ad astra (21/?)
verse: Death Star
characters: Jyn Erso, Cassian Andor, Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Bodhi Rook; Jyn/Cassian, Han/Leia, Luke & Leia
stuff that happens: Jyn, Cassian, Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie, and Bodhi try to survive the Death Star one last time.
previous chapters: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, twenty

Jyn swallowed, meeting Cassian’s eyes. There was nowhere left to hide.

Only, as ever, words.

“Jyn,” he murmured, to her relief. She couldn’t be Lyr in this moment. She couldn’t. Cassian exhaled, then tilted his head closer, breath on her cheek. “Thank you. For everything.”

title: like a storm in the desert (1/*mumble*)
verse: at last, it's an everybody lives verse!
characters: Cassian Andor, Jyn Erso; Bodhi Rook, Chirrut Îmwe, Baze Malbus, Taidu Sefla, Han Solo; Jyn/Cassian, implied Han/Leia, one-sided and half-hearted Jyn/Han
stuff that happens: *deep breath* Chirrut, Baze, and Bodhi survive, and are able to rescue two of Cassian's men, along with Jyn and Cassian themselves.

Again, the shuttle lurched. Jyn braced Cassian as well as she could, but his shudder reverberated through his body and hers, and a gasp rushed through his clenched teeth. It was only a moment, but frustration boiled in her. She couldn’t make it stop, couldn’t do anything—

In the next instant, the motion of the shuttle fell into into perfect steadiness, so balanced and smooth that it could only mean one thing. Jyn might almost have cried. Instead, she let her head drop, pressed her brow to Cassian’s cold cheek.

“We made it,” she whispered into his ear. Drawing herself together, she straightened up. “We’ve gone into hyperspace. We’re heading home.”

stuff that happens: Jyn gets frustrated with inaction; Cassian distracts himself by working on K-2SO; Jyn and Efrah try to keep Zekheret from bumbling about the prisons.
previous chapters: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen

“How long does this go on?” she asked quietly. “Keeping our heads down and backing away from risks and … how long is it worth it?”

Cassian looked straight at her, dark eyes very clear. Jyn expected one of his well-turned declarations, his way of slicing through layers of difficulty and complication to some simple, burning core. Rebellions are built on hope. You’re not the only one who lost everything. It was for a cause I believed in, a cause that was worth it.

“I don’t know,” he said.

I mean, far more than in my 20s. It's ridiculous and, anyway, yesterday sucked. LALA FANDOM

title: per ardua ad astra (16/?)
verse: Death Star
characters: Cassian Andor, Jyn Erso, Bodhi Rook; Governor Tarkin; OC—unnamed sergeant; Jyn/Cassian
stuff that happens: Tarkin has a chat with the Alderaanians, and Jyn helps destroy a datachip.
previous chapters: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen

The rest of the room remained quiet and still. Nobody dared meet anyone else’s eyes. Cassian himself fixed his gaze on the governor’s skeletal profile.

Tarkin favoured the men of Alderaan with a thin smile.

“If you believe the Empire has forgotten you,” he, “let me assure you: it has not.”

characters: Cassian Andor, Jyn Erso, Bodhi Rook; General Tagge; OCs—Ensign Fiander Zelin, an unnamed Alderaanian lieutenant, various others; Jyn/Cassian
stuff that happens: Jyn, Cassian, and Bodhi respond to the catastrophe in their different ways; Cassian gets the chance to demonstrate his leadership skills; I remain aggressively indifferent to the EU
previous chapters: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen

“I can’t believe it. I can’t. It must be a … a trick, or a test, or … it’s not real. It’s not.”

“Someone’s going to pay for this. Whoever it was. We’ll make—”

Thoughts, emotions, suspicions: they all slipped into alignment, the junction as smooth and exact as the pieces of an engine or a droid clicking into place. For the first time in a long, long while, Cassian set the Rebellion aside.

“Diçelà!”

characters: Cassian Andor, Jyn Erso, Bodhi Rook; a prison officer from ANH, various background OCs, and in absentia, Lyra Erso and K-2SO; Jyn/Cassian
stuff that happens: Cassian recovers enough to go on duty as Willix; Jyn and Cassian start some work projects while keeping up with Bodhi and accidentally flirting; the Death Star finally reaches the plot.

“Sounds satisfying.”

To her alarm, he broke into the bright, dimpled smile that he usually reserved for lying, absent the usual traces of coldness. “Very.”

She felt a bit like he’d brained her with one of her new blasters. It was profoundly unfair. Not to be outdone, she let herself return the smile without any attempt at restraint, her own as light and vibrantly alive as she felt in that moment. Not triumph, not relief, not even hope: just the sheer pleasure of their coexistence.

stuff that happens: Jyn and Cassian plan for gathering information and deepening their covers; Cassian's recovery continues, not as quickly as they want; and in the meanwhile, emotions and coping mechanisms!
previous chapters: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine

“How much pain have you been in?” she asked. “On a scale of one to ten.”

Frowning, Cassian said, “I don’t know. Five, perhaps.”

He shot her a look of betrayal. “Thank you for your contribution, Lyr.”

title: per ardua ad astra (8/?)
verse: Death Star
characters: Bodhi Rook, Cassian Andor, Jyn Erso; Bain Efrah, Quartermaster Brakas; hints of Jyn/Cassian
stuff that happens: Bodhi gets a crash course in Assets 101; Efrah offers orientation services to Lyr and meets Willix; Cassian orders the requisitions Jyn missed; Jyn stresses over Leia, Wiki-hops from Alderaan to Vaesda, and hears an inevitable revelation.
previous chapters: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven

Efrah cast a quick glance at her, unreadable except a very slight, very knowing smile.

“Well, now I can see why you’d stick around that deathtrap for your captain.

“Oh?” Her fingers tingled. Puzzled for a moment, Jyn realized she was gripping her datapad so tightly that she’d cut off blood from her fingertips. She forced herself to relax her grip.

Very solemnly, Efrah said, “His cheekbones would be a great loss to the galaxy. You’re a true hero, Lyr.”

Jyn snorted. “Just doing my part for the Empire.”

...who does not appear in this chapter, except in spirit. I like to imagine that he represents/spawns a strain of reason among certain contingents, though.

Unrelatedly, this chapter was really the first to provoke the apparently inevitable "well, in the EU" preaching. If you knew me in the lj days, I'm sure you can imagine how low my tolerance has ground at this point, so I might have been a bit brusque. But most people were nice and thoughtful—Rogue One fandom is probably my favourite of the SW subfandoms, now that the Migratory Discourse Fandom has mostly abandoned us.

title: per ardua ad astra (7/?)
verse: Death Star
characters: Jyn Erso, Bodhi Rook, and (very briefly) Cassian Andor; OCs—Bain Efrah, Mihal Zekheret; Jyn/Cassian (muddled What Are These Feelings + Inexplicable Preoccupation flavour; it's mostly focused on Jyn's undercover adventures).
stuff that happens: Jyn pseudo-bonds with the two Imperial NCOs she met earlier, particularly the hard-harded Efrah; she finds a way, though not the obvious one, to blame Cassian for her disinterest in flirtation; Zekheret and Efrah drop some ANH bombshells; not all Imperials approve of current tactics; Bodhi staves off nervous breakdown.
previous chapters: one, two, three, four, five, six

Hard to figure out what a woman like Efrah would see in an amiable ass like Zekheret, but then, she’d never had much success figuring out what other people ever saw in each other.

Not that she’d much bothered herself over it. And she didn’t want to bother herself with Efrah and Zekheret’s relationship, either, despite the flicker of curiosity. She didn’t want to know them, or anyone. Even at the best of times. Certainly, these were far from those. Soon, she or they would be dead, and it’d be good riddance for whoever lived. Hell, they’d kill her in a moment if they knew who she was. No point in cozying up for that, except—

Except she needed information.

To her annoyance, he mentioned nothing of substance beyond his opinion that things would be better with Governor Tarkin running the Death Star.

“Can’t be worse than Krennic,” said a sergeant across from them, one of the only female ones Jyn had yet seen. “Backwater creep who thinks he’s better than the people doing the real work. I saw him flouncing around in that cape once, like he’s Darth fucking Vader. Ugh. It’ll be just our luck if he made it off. I bet he has.”

previous chapters: one, two

She felt faintly soiled. More than faintly. Did it feel the same to Cassian?

Everything I did, I did for the Rebellion. Not the words of a man who enjoyed the choices he made. Not even the words of a man who believed them right, except as necessary sacrifices for a greater moral end. Perhaps he hated this near as much as Jyn. But Cassian had the cause to live by, even his darkest paths lit by that clear, shining purpose. Jyn—she didn’t quite know what she had, even if she managed to claw their way out of this place. She believed, she hoped, she cared about the fight. She did now. And she wouldn’t give up, ever. She just … she couldn’t see herself existing in Cassian’s stark simplicities, everything bleak or brilliant.

In any case, she felt as if she walked backwards, back to Lianna. None of this for the cause, for some great end, just survival. But not hers alone, she reminded herself. Cassian’s and Bodhi’s. They needed her. That was a cause in itself.

Bastards, she still thought. Cassian had better be grateful.

Then she felt sick, mind alight with the memory of his blood on her hands, on his mouth. She hadn’t forgotten. But just for a moment, Cassian had meant the cool-headed spy, somewhere out there glowering at the unworthy, not the man who carved up his own body getting to her.

Soon, she promised herself. He’d be himself again, preaching about the cause, and she, well, she’d figure out what she was. Maybe a Rebel. Definitely free.

I keep promising myself that I won't—I even managed to hold to it for, like, eight whole months! But I love Rogue One so much. SO. MUCH.

I was idly thinking of shippy AUs but nothing except "well they need to kiss" came to mind, lol, when a terrible and wonderful realization settled on me about the potential disaster that surviving above Scarif could really be. I wrote up a babbling post about it on Tumblr, mapped out an eleven-page outline, and the post started accumulating enough notes that I got anxious that someone else might write it first. (Clearly the best motivation for writing.)

ANYWAY. THIS IS WHAT I'M DOING NOW. (Also working on Lucy, the clear winner of the poll, but ... AHHHHH ROGUE ONE)

title: per ardua ad astra (aka I couldn't think of a title and went for maximum pretension)

verse: Death Star AU! The reason for the name will become evident by the end of the chapter. (There's considerable overlap with the Rogue One backstory of the Lucyverse, but the AUs themselves are completely independent.)

fandom: Star Wars

characters: Jyn Erso, Cassian Andor, Bodhi Rook; later, Leia Organa, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo; Jyn/Cassian

length: 4900 words (this chapter; God knows what it’ll be eventually)

stuff that happens: Jyn, Cassian, and Bodhi survive, only to face the worst bonus mission ever.

“Jyn, we have to leave now,” Bodhi was shouting.

She wasted no more time, just climbed over the railing, ignoring the twinges in her leg. They were about to be worse, but she could see Cassian near-collapsed over Bodhi. She’d live. Hopefully.

Jyn jumped.
