anghraine: artist's rendition of faramir; text: i would not take this thing if it lay by the highway (faramir)
I have just finished my last class of the term, which I may or may not pass (statistics, eurgh), and I decided to celebrate my vacation by dredging up what I could from the Wayback Machine's copies of Emyn Arnen -- a Tolkien (specifically, Faramir/Éowyn) site I talked about here.  In particular, the old Purist Rantings threads.

A number of highly active members of Emyn Arnen, including yours truly, had many, many objections to the LOTR movies.  Oh, we did love them.  We just hated them, too.  This is the purist way.  Since we kept spilling over and offending the somewhat less ... hm, vocal filmfen, I made a thread strictly for ranting about the movies.

And we ranted.  For thirteen pages.  That's when the admins closed it and started a new one.  We maxed that one out, too -- and the next.  It was only on the fourth thread that we began to lose steam.

It would take hundreds of pages (and hours) to transcribe all of them.  However, since they may vanish at any moment, I wanted to preserve them in some way.  Therefore, I begin to provide the truly exhaustive version of ...

I've spent the weekend glutting myself on Tolkien-related things -- not only "Child of Hope," which I wrote about yesterday, and "The Hunt for Gollum," which I watched today, but reviews and old essays and the Tor readings and ... well, things.  It's surreal:  I've always thought of myself as part of Tolkien fandom, but honestly, I haven't been.  I got absorbed in Austen and Potter fandoms, started taking 400-level classes, and kind of lost track of it all.

So I realised that it'd been years since I was this involved in anything Middle-earth, and thought, "Huh, I wonder whatever happened to Emyn Arnen?"

For those who don't know (and again, probably don't care), Emyn Arnen is a Faramir/Éowyn fic archive and, formerly, a forum for Middle-earth discussion, which IIRC focussed on Éowyn (sometimes) and Faramir (usually) but mostly meandered about -- we were largely our own moderators.  I lurked there for what seemed like ages, before finally delurking to rant about Philippa Boyens' remarks about Faramir.

It was the first place I ever posted, the first community I was ever involved with, the first place I ever posted fanfic, etc etc.  And I was pretty heavily involved for awhile, mostly in long (often very long) discussions with [info]nestashouse  and [info]rakshathedemon , and later [info]cressidarambles .  Eventually we drifted to (as you can see) lj, and Brothers of Gondor, and -- I don't really know what happened to the other EA-people next.  And today, when I wandered over to see what had happened in the last four years or whatever, I found that the forums were gone.
