In general, from what I know of the fields of psychology and psychiatry, that is ABSOLUTELY the case with pretty much every disorder. The thing that spurs research is not "how much does this disrupt your life/how hard is it to live with" but rather "how much does this annoy/freak out the people around you."

This is one of the reason we need more people with disabilities in the medical field, both in research and treatment.

True, i’ve been in two sides and for me depression is 100 times worst than mania/hypomania

When i’m depressed my life literally stops for months. I can’t study,i can’t work, i can’t have sex with my girlfriend, i don’t eat,i don’t exercise,i don’t clean the house , I DON’T DO ANYTHING vs mania/hypomania i can still carry my life,of course there’s bad consequences

Apart from outright bigotry and viciousness, there are few Tumblr trends I find more annoying than tagging anything related to social justice as #compassion fatigue. I don't know how widespread it is, but it's happened enough on my posts (even fandom posts that only vaguely touch on actual social justice) from enough different people that it doesn't seem like a fluke.

And I haaaaate it. That is not what "compassion fatigue" is about and characterizing any allusion to the existence of societal inequality as a matter of compassion fatigue is incredibly gross, IMO. Most people who have used the tag on reblogs of my posts do it when reblogging posts about autism specifically, though the most recent was completely unrelated to that, and it's approaching auto-block territory.

I once had a therapist who had me take the Enneagram, which was … weird, but it’s a fun system for thinking about fictional characters. I’ve been primarily using it to get original characters clear in my mind, but now it’s like … what about our faves?

Say, Darcy for me: I could see a few others, but I’m inclined to go for Type One, with features of both the healthy and unhealthy aspects:

Extremely principled, always want to be fair, objective, and ethical: truth and justice primary values. Sense of responsibility, personal integrity, and of having a higher purpose
-
Highly dogmatic, self-righteous, intolerant, and inflexible. Begin dealing in absolutes: they alone know “The Truth.” Everyone else is wrong: very severe in judgments, while rationalizing own actions

He has a weak Two wing (they can be “overbearing, patronizing, presumptuous” while Nine is reallyyy not him), but by the end, he mostly lands at just a solid healthy One:

Conscientious with strong personal convictions: they have an intense sense of right and wrong, personal, religious, and moral values. Wish to be rational, reasonable, self-disciplined, mature, moderate.

[personal profile] heckofabecca asked:

How would you classify Darcy and Elizabeth on the introvert/extrovert spectrum??? I just saw a meme that has them BOTH as introverts... which sounds fishy

I said:

Darcy’s definitely an introvert.

Elizabeth … I could probably go either way? It’s possible for outgoing, charming people to be actually introverted—they like people, they’re just drained by them. So, potentially, you could see Elizabeth as that sort of stealth introvert, retreating into solitude or near-solitude(with Jane) to recuperate all that energy she expends.

Buuuut you could just as easily see her “spirits” (to use her word) as pretty typical extraversion, energized by the people and world around her, and turning broody and discontented when she’s isolated with her thoughts for any serious length of time. You could even see her tendency to “side” with definite extraverts like Bingley and Wickham (despite ultimately connecting more to introverts like Jane, Charlotte, and Darcy) as a byproduct of an immature extraversion where she can’t quite grasp that some people are operating off a very different system.

These days, I do tend to see her as a pretty standard extravert, but there’s a fair argument for both IMO (or something in between). Also, I think adaptations tend to lean pretty hard on the introvert side, which can be a factor in how she’s categorized.

From wyncatastrophe. And look, I'm shocked.

You Are An INTJ

The Scientist

You have a head for ideas - and you are good at improving systems.

Logical and strategic, you prefer for everything in your life to be organized.

You tend to be a bit skeptical. You're both critical of yourself and of others.

Independent and stubborn, you tend to only befriend those who are a lot like you.

In love, you are always striving to improve your relationship.

You have strong ideas of what love should be like.

At work, you excel in figuring out difficult tasks. People think of you as "the brain."

You would make an excellent scientist, engineer, or programmer.

How you see yourself: Reasonable, knowledgeable, and competent

When other people don't get you, they see you as: Aloof, controlling, and insensitive

I’ve been mulling this over for awhile, and figured it’d be suitable for yesterday, but I’m off-schedule as always. Anyway. This is a post about a specific instance of ableism!fail in my home fandom (Austen), though I opted not to link to it (I mentioned it briefly before, where I did link to it, but this is...exhaustive enough that I think it's better not to). This is probably angry in my way and very long and quite possibly rude and I still feel the need to say it. If you think that’s going to be upsetting for you, don’t read any further. Thanks.

I turned in my last essays today, and got my Spanish final back -- 56.5/59, so hurrah.  It was my last Spanish class, so ... I don't know.  It's inconvenient to schedule around sequential classes, especially when they fill up as quickly as Spanish does, but I'll miss it.  I've been studying off-and-on for ten years, and I forgot just about everything I knew for five of them, but it was super-easy to pick up once I started up again.

Eh.  I'm partly relieved for the scheduling reasons, partly terrified that I'm going to lose it all over again (I'm not anywhere near fluent, but I know all the verb tenses and stuff), and partly ... wistful, I guess.  There aren't a lot of classes where the material seems to leap into your brain of its own accord, whether you're trying to learn it or not.  Anyway, I'll be happy if I just pass English, and I should do well in psychology.  I generally do, for some inexplicable reason - I'm really not a people person.

I just did one.  Well, a social psychology experiment, but close enough.  Our last class was this morning, and the assignment was to go out and break social norms, and see how people react.  The rules:  you can't do anything illegal, or anything that breaks official ethics codes for psychological experiments, according to the university's blah blah blah.  (The codes are important.  The people who come up with them, not so much.)

Naturally, I quailed in terror, all the more when "we" decided to follow random people around campus.  Read more... )
