anghraine: a shot of an enormous statue near a mountain from amazon's the rings of power (númenor [meneltarma])
*deep breath*

The Amazon series is officially going to the depths of the Misty Mountains, Lindon, and “the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor”

!!!!!!!!!!

Tagged: #i went from 'at least new gifsets' to MY PEOPLE!!!!!! in about four seconds #breathtaking is RIGHT but ... i'm so unsure ... idk #mood: OMG YES wait oh no but what if yes but what if NO #a;sdfkj;kja #i'm preemptively alarmed at what they do with the ruling queens esp telperiën and míriel #but maybe it'll be super cool and exciting! gah!

[ETA 4/6/2024: I'd forgotten how much I didn't know at that point! And Míriel is one of the greatest elements of ROP so I was sold, lmao.]
anghraine: a shot of galadriel from amazon's rings of power with her head wrapped and a star attached to her shoulder (galadriel [ice])
Aww, I've just spent several hours explaining various backstories from The Silmarillion to my mother. She's watching ROP and really likes it, and is also listening to an audiobook of The Silmarillion at night but keeps losing track of things and getting different things from each confused, and is trying to figure out details. She's very worried that the Stranger might be Sauron and took awhile to warm up to Galadriel but really liked her in Númenor. She also feels the Númenóreans should be more visually distinct in adaptations than they ever have been (I agree; it bothers me less with ROP because at least there's a cool, vivid aesthetic for them and no species is cast that way, but I would personally prefer a weirder take). She was baffled by basically everything Tolkien ever said about Elrond given his depiction in the Jackson movies, and had previously thought ROP's Míriel and Elbereth were the same person, so there was a lot to clear up, but it was fun (though as a dedicated dog person, she was very sad about Huan!).

I reblogged busymagpie's illustration of Tar-Míriel here. The image is small in her blog style, but if you click on it, you can see a much larger version!

I said:

#oh this is a wonderful míriel #the only last ruler of númenor we recognize in THIS house and such a great rendition of her!

I reblogged this Byzantine-themed illustration of Tar-Míriel and tagged it:

#HELLA #tar míriel #the only final monarch we acknowledge in THIS house

Númenórean ruling queens sexuality headcanons, because why not:

Tar-Ancalimë: very lesbian, though her society is heteronormative enough that it takes her awhile to grasp, esp because she dislikes men generally. There’s a certain amount of vying to be one of her “favorites.”

Tar-Telperiën: very ace. She has always known this.

Tar-Vanimeldë: pan and cheerful about it. She and Herucalmo have a sort of technically open relationship, in that he’s mostly just into power and doesn’t have affairs of his own, but also doesn’t care if she does.

Tar-Míriel: very, very quietly bi. She has an equally quiet ~special friendship~ with one of her handmaidens, who is bold enough to call her Míriel when they’re alone. They’re strong enough in mind and careful enough to hide it even from Sauron, and it’s a little spot of joy in Míriel’s terrible life.

I was just watching an old Akallabêth video and remembered the AU idea I had where the Eagles rescue Míriel from the Meneltarma and take her to Elendil or something.

The idea was that she becomes ruler of the Númenórean kingdoms (in truth and not only in name), and though it’s another tragedy when Elendil is killed taking down Sauron, she lives to see Sauron defeated (fuck yeah!!). And she survives the war by a good while as the reigning Queen of Arnor and Gondor. And this creates a precedent for Ruling Queens in Middle-earth, so there are more of those along the way, and Fíriel also becomes ruling monarch (not Arvedui tyvm) and so. Things.

But mostly … Míriel! is! saved!!

Míriel the Númenórean, of course.

I was defending/waxing nostalgic about multiple icons over at Tumblr yesterday, and I also got the renewal of my paid account yesterday (I normally hate spending money, but I'm happy to support Dreamwidth!). And that means I have all my icons and the extra room for more, which got me thinking about what I could be missing.

And then I saw people going on about how ~terrible Míriel's costumes in ROP are, how much better the aesthetic of the movies was, blahblah, and given that I love most of her costumes and vastly prefer the ROP aesthetic (esp for Númenor), that's what I need! Especially the Zenobia costume... hmm. I'm not especially good at icon-making, but at least Firefox lets me take screencaps without shenanigans.

I reblogged this list of AUs, which I'd originally posted in 2013:

- People are talking about variations on it already (and I love those <3 <3) but one I’ve always thought would be interesting is if Túrin and Niënor didn’t find out who she was until after the child was born. maybe they still both commit suicide. maybe just one of them. maybe they try and hide again. idk

- Ancalimë in the reign of Tar-Silmariën

- another spin on Míriel lives: Míriel makes it to the top of the Meneltarma and (somehow) survives. She’s rescued by one of the great Eagles and carried to Middle-earth. Although deeply traumatized by her completely awful life, she’s not so much so that she retires into obscurity or whatever, but is acclaimed as Tar-Míriel in truth. And wow does she have a huge bone to pick with Sauron.

- Faramir is only mildly injured in the retreat to Minas Tirith and Denethor, who had a rather bad scare, is actually really happy about this and receives him with honour. Their relationship isn’t sunshine and roses because it’s them, but it's better and they’re cooperating, and Denethor isn’t driven to his last fatal glance in the palantír and they’re able to lead the defense of Minas Tirith. Also Faramir is not nearly as overwhelmed by Aragorn’s kingliness. SHENANIGANS.

In 2020, I added:

I posted these in … 2013, I think, but I’m still really fond of them all

#tar-míriel of gondor is just ... *kisses fingertips* yES #i'd forgotten that one tbh but i love it #the last one is my eternal favourite tolkien au that I'm not going to write though

fic!

Not a fic of broad appeal, but it's what inspired me! There might be errors, since I wrote it very quickly, but it was fun (in its way).

title: the voices of the sea
verse: Daughters of Númenor; AU where the explicit throwback characters in LOTR (Aragorn, Denethor, Imrahil, and Faramir) are genderbent (as Aranor, Andreth, Imraphel, and Míriel)
characters: Faramir/Míriel; Tar-Míriel, Boromir (in absentia)
stuff that happens: For Míriel, daughter of the Steward of Gondor, the gifts of Númenor can be difficult to receive. AKA a very belated sequel to “cloven shield and broken sword,” in which Aranor found a dying Boromir:

She remembered him tugging at her leggings, demanding to know but what next? And she remembered him in Lothlórien, haughty and suspicious until he began to speak of Míriel, the sister he had loved and protected through all the days of their lives. Boromir the tall, the fair, the bold, had died, and his treasured sister lived on; what was Aranor’s grief to that?

May the news of his loss come to you swiftly and kindly, jewel-maiden!

The dream always began the same way.
