anghraine: vader extending his lightsaber; text: and now for the airing of grievances! (anakin [grievances])
My Tumblr saviour has stopped working altogether :(

#luckily my blacklist is about eighty five percent things i just don't care about #and only fifteen percent things that actually bother me (mostly pertaining to my country's politics) #so

:-/ How do you feel about xkit?

I replied:

I have it!

She said:

well then the blacklist function is very useful! It’ll probably be a pain entering all your blocked tags again but then you’ve got your clean dash back!

I said:

Oh, thanks!

I posted chapters 64-70 of pro patria.

Footnotes on Ch 70:

1) They escaped Ascalon right before the Searing, crossed the kingdom of Kryta, joined and betrayed the White Mantle, and even faced a lich lord: a very concise summary of the first Guild Wars.

2) it sounded just like our family stories: the GW2 PC can inherit certain items from the GW1 one, so with noble origin, at least, it seems entirely possible that the GW2 PC is part of the same family.

Sent off an explanatory email to the most terrifying person on my committee. I will now die while hiding under a pillow.

#the internal screaming is very loud just now

I reblogged a few hours later with:

On the bright side: he was really nice and said he was glad that I wrote

On the downside: he’s having surgery when I need to be taking my exams :)

#aghhhhh #but a different kind of aghhhhh than before #he's like... you can hold your exams then and have someone else conduct the examination #me (silently): wHO #it was everything i could do to assemble a full committee by stretching my interests as far as they go #*could go #i mean i could go victorianist like i did in my ma but EUGH i don't like victorians

An anon asked:

So as I sit here with way too much time to ponder about all kinds of things, I find myself wondering why Imrahil didn't just take Faramir straight to the Houses of Healing instead of to his father. Do you have a theory? Is it simply due to the fact that Faramir was the ruling Steward's son, and it was an authoritarian issue? He could have brought Faramir to the Houses of Healing and THEN told Denethor. It would have been far less dramatic though.

I replied:

On the meta-level, I think it is for the dramatic imagery, and the parallel to Denethor’s farewell; Faramir’s welcome back depended on the manner of his return, and then we’re given that return “after great deeds,” but now he’s dying without awareness of his welcome. Imrahil’s remark underscores all this (I think deliberately).

In-story … yeah, I’d be inclined to attribute it to Denethor’s position.

I posted chapters 71-77 of pro patria.

Ch 71 footnotes:

1) she was vague on the details: the GW1 PC doesn’t cover themself with glory in their dealings with the lich; they’re constantly fooled through the first half of the game.

2) The family story went that she became an agent of the Ebon Vanguard: in the GW1 expansion Guild Wars: Eye of the North, the PC has the option to become an agent of the Ebon Vanguard, gaining ascending ’[x] Agent’ titles. The game isn’t clear about what happens after that, but I imagine them (or at least Irene) sticking with the Vanguard.

3) a guild to attack Ascalonian children: an actual ambient conversation.

Ch 74 footnotes:

1) jewelry and clothes: you can develop crafting abilities in the game, including as a jeweler and a tailor, though Althea would probably just buy things.

Ch 75 footnotes:

1) At this point in the story, Althea’s standard outfit is this; the pirate costume is this.

#the pirate section is ... well. game canon and we'll leave it at that

I’m ambivalent about the Romola Garai Emma, but I would murder a kitten for a MP adaptation that treated Fanny and Mary along the lines of the way that Emma did with Emma/Jane/Frank.

Like … both are brought to live under the guardianship of a rich and powerful uncle, both are enormously shaped by their upbringings within their foster families, but those upbringings are very different and Mary and Fanny are wildly different in personality yet attracted … and I think it could also raise the emotional stakes for the audience, which is sometimes difficult for people with MP adaptations.

why would you leave that golden commentary in the tags?!

I replied:

Heeeh, well, it seemed a bit speculative! But:

#if i had artistic skills i would totally draw tiny fanny vs tiny mary and henry in the same basic positions #like #being led to some fancy door or something #and then young fanny being almost sent away to mrs norris #and then mary sending herself away from the admiral #and then meeting #idk maybe it /would/ make a better graphic novel than film but i can’t do any of these things anyway #but IF I COULD that is how i would adapt mp

anghraine: a painting of the sons of the 2nd earl of talbot by thomas lawrence; the elder is red-haired and rather plain, the younger black-haired and pretty (fitzwilliam and darcy)
I’m not Colonel Fitzwilliam’s biggest fan, but sometimes I think about just how easy it would be for him to resent the hell out of Darcy.

Just imagine—you’re the younger son, and very conscious of it, but your even younger cousin is set to inherit multiple estates and wealth and influence with them. And he’s an only son and his parents encourage him to think he’s better than everyone. And they die, which is sad, but it does leave him a rich and powerful man at the grand old age of 23. His tenants and servants are devoted to him. His only sibling thinks he can never be wrong about anything, ever. When he shows up places, men and women alike start commenting on how attractive he is, while you are “not handsome.” Even your grouchy aunt has chosen him as her desired son-in-law. He doesn’t marry your other cousin, though—he marries the pretty girl you were flirting with, because of course he does.

And yet … they’re bffs who trust each other implicitly.

:)

#i love darcy more than any other character but like #his arc basically takes him from the guy who has it all to the guy who has even more of it all #he could easily be an incredibly irritating person to have in your family! #and fitzwilliam is clearly very aware of what he's missing out on by not being an heir #and yet ... constant intimacy!

awesomenell65 reblogged this post, and added a comment about how regrettable it is that the Gardiners are so sidelined in adaptation.

I replied:

I think it throws off the balance of who is really important, and what behaviors are being held up as admirable in Austen’s work, in this novel in particular.

This, exactly. It’s especially important because of Austen’s enduring preoccupation with the effects of education and upbringing on how people develop and who they become. P&P in particular highlights the failures of parents and parental figures over and over (even Mr Collins has a bad parenting backstory!). The Gardiners are virtually the only exception to this (both w/ their own children and with their influence on Jane and Elizabeth), and their intermittent but persistent presence right up to the last line centers the qualities that are really important in going forward, and undercuts the importance of others, especially class.

#the gardiners are both some of the lowest-ranking characters in the book #and the most purely benevolent #in a way that's not really saccharine at all #but it's... not sure how to put this #but #adaptations are always choosing to foreground certain elements and minimize others in their retellings #this is an inevitable part of adapting things—and /what/ is chosen for each can be very suggestive #beyond just weighing judgment on whether it's faithful / unfaithful #it would be perfectly possible for adaptations to foreground class /more/ than the book does #and instead it's largely diminished and when addressed it's in a super reductionist way #and that reflects a general lack of interest in it that i think particularly influences the treatment of the gardiners and mrs reynolds
