I've seen snippets of the House questioning Hunter Biden on the various GOP conspiracy theories, and on the one hand, it's incredibly stupid and just crafting an opportunity to supply dramatic moments for their base. On the bright side, Hunter himself seems ... extremely aware of this and his "bzuh?" at the whole thing (and specifically at Matt Gaetz) is kind of hilarious. Also, the Democratic members of the committee pointedly asking Hunter Biden if he/the president have done various things that Trump/the Trump family absolutely did led to this:

Swalwell: Did your father ever employ in the Oval Office any direct family member to also work in the Oval Office?
HB: My father has never employed any direct family members, to my knowledge.
Swalwell: While your father was President, did anyone in the family receive 41 trademarks from China?
HB: No.
Swalwell: As President and leader of the party, has your father ever tried to install as the chairperson of the party a daughter-in-law or anyone else in the family?
HB: No. And I don't think that anyone in my family would be crazy enough to want to be the chairperson of the DNC.

Starting the Metamorphoses, and already:

“And while other animals look on all fours at the ground
He gave to humans an upturned face, and told them to lift
Their eyes to the stars.”

[personal profile] jubaah responded to this post:

oooh which translation are you reading? I love that book…

I replied:

Stanley Lombardo’s! I chose his because a friend chose it for his reading list, and I liked his Aeneid for what it is—I’ve never read the Metamorphoses before, though, so I hope it’s a good one :)

[personal profile] brynnmclean responded to this post:

I literally just read one of Tolkien’s letters where he explicitly stated that Venice was Gondor/Pelargir…

I replied:

Yeah, at varying points he explicitly compares Gondor to Italy/Rome, the Byzantine Empire, and ancient Egypt—but certainly not France!

[personal profile] heget said:

Please if Gondor was France JRRT would be disparaging it and especially its language

I replied:

lmaoooo true

anghraine: jyn and cassian circling each other in the hangar (jyn and cassian [hangar scene])
I reblogged a Jyn/Cassian gifset by andorjyny, of Jyn and Cassian in Rogue One up to their usual nonsense (read: super shippy moments) and added:

#op this is a good gifset and you should feel good

I posted the second chapter of we also are daughters of the great and tagged it:

#lmao it took five years to write these 3000 words #i was going to make footnotes for all the canon references but i'm too lazy rn #i'll probably go back and edit that in later though

Later that day, I added (twenty-six) footnotes and said:

#let no one say that i don't take my fic deadly seriously

velvet-jellyfish responded to this post:

This is great! Your writing really sounds like Tolkien, and the story fits in well with canon.

I replied:

Hey, thanks! I really appreciate hearing it—striking a balance between imitating Tolkien and my own voice is pretty difficult, so it’s definitely a pleasure and relief to hear :)

This anon sent another ask:

I don’t want to be childish about it … but sometimes autism+anxiety is extremely unfun.

Tagged: #i know why emailing people feels like my heart is going to stop but also WHY #i've been putting off this one email for over a year and a half and now it Must Be Written and aghhhhhhhhhh #(naturally it is much worse to write /because/ i've put it off so long! this is the way of things)

Formatting all these old(er) Tolkien posts got some wheels turning in my mind, so I was idly thinking about general Gondor stuff and suddenly my brain was like:

Hey. HEY. Faramir can probably remember the fall of Númenor more clearly than his mother's face.

...anyway, I'll leave that cheerful thought with you all as well.

Adaptation discourse has crossed my dash a few times lately, and … tbh, I think direct adaptations do inherently claim a connection to their source material. If their creators don’t want audiences considering how they’re engaging with the source material, they can file off the damn serial numbers like anyone else.

Tagged: #yes it's also a film; a tv series; a book; a whatever #and i think it's perfectly fair and important to consider things in those lights too #but that doesn't mean that it's invalid to look at something that proclaims itself a version of [x] and consider its relationship to [x]

I’m currently 25 pgs into the Metamorphoses, and the gods have managed to be even worse assholes than I expected!

I guess Apollo has some excuse in being struck by Cupid’s arrow, but literally the first thing Jupiter says to Io is:

“Virgin worthy of Jove, clearly destined to make
Some man or other happy in your bed,
You should find some shade over there in the woods”

>_<

Tagged: #yes yes values dissonance but also: the fuck? #also i'm not sure it is /that/ much values dissonance; the introduction argues that the gods are deliberately written as capricious tyrants #in any case jupiter is so relentlessly terrible that it is all the more satisfying that ovid explicitly compares augustus to him

I reblogged a comic about an aasimar paladin and tagged it:

bailesu responded to this post:

I’m amazed the Greek Gods can be worse than anyone’s expectations. They are certainly asses.

I replied:

Eh, the Roman ones have their own special flavor of terrible, especially in Ovid.

I know lots of people love where they’re from, but I love the PNW so much
