[personal profile] jubaah responded to this:

it’s funny bc the stories in those books are so horrible, but… Idk, I genuinely like it hahaha I’m super curious about your notes, though :) Are you gonna write about it?

I replied:

Yeah, it’s a really entertaining read despite all the terrible things! A little rich for my blood now and then, but I like revenge tragedies as a rule, so plenty of it is my sort of thing. I think I’d enjoy it more if I wasn’t rushed and worried about forgetting things tbh.

It’s on my reading list as background for 16th century British lit (which also has some 16th-cent Continental things like Machiavelli and Erasmus), so I’m not sure if it’ll come up or not in writing. It might with Shakespeare et al since it was such an inspiration.

A relevant sample of notes, lol:

[Screenshot of Zotero notes reading:

Pelops

Everyone blames Niobe except her brother, Pelops, who weeps for her. Pelops reveals the ivory in his shoulder; he was cut to pieces by his father (for reasons?) and the gods put him back together but couldn't find that bit, so they used ivory instead.

Procne and Philomela

All the cities send rulers with condolences to Niobe's people, except Athens, which has problems of its own. It's besieged by barbarians, until the siege is lifted by Tereus of Thrace. The grateful king gives his daughter Procne to him in marriage, but the usual marriage deities don't attend—just the Furies. WHAT COULD GO WRONG.]

I’m trying out Campfire Pro (for a “it was half off and recommended by my favorite YouTuber so I bought it” value of trying), and with a little finagling, set up my template for the character section. It doesn’t seem to save the specific categories I put in my lists (I’ll have to type in General, Alignment, MBTI, Enneagram into the “Personality Traits” section every time, for instance), but it does save the organization and size of the boxes.

ETA: Actually, there’s a work-around; you can duplicate an individual character, so if you just set everything up on one “character,” you can right-click and duplicate it to keep all the information and set-up you have, and just fill in the details for a new character.

Looks cool so far!

I read the Sanford and Barkley report (not all the emails etc, just the report and coverage). I have a lot of opinions (most of which are currently being expressed by Denise on Bluesky) but one of them is that I do not buy the narrative that Diane Lacey is a hero for very belatedly doing the right thing. She didn't have to do it and kudos for that, I guess, but mostly I think minimal decency is benefiting from contrast with McCarty et al who are so much worse.

But everyone fucked up really badly in racist, spineless, immoral, and wildly incompetent ways and I think the report is correct that they will not experience the worst of the consequences for it.

I'll admit I got a laugh out of this, though:

Belated again, but here it is!

Search in your current space, whether brick-and-mortar or digital. Post a picture (a link to a picture will be fine!) or description of something that is or represents:

1. Something your favorite character would like
2. Something that makes you laugh
3. A fandom place you would like to visit
4. A fandom creator (pro or not) you'd like to meet
5. Something you find comforting
6. Something from a favorite TV series or movie from your childhood
7. A piece of clothing you love
8. A book or song with a color in the title
9. Something only someone in your fandom would understand

Ooh, challenging! Let's see:

1) Something that your favorite character would like:

My favorite character is Fitzwilliam Darcy! I've got stacks of books all around me for grad school reasons, which he'd definitely like. And a bunch are eighteenth-century texts, which would suit his relatively modern tastes(IMO). To go with a specific choice ... given his dry sense of humor and falling in love with Elizabeth, I think I'll pick this:

2) Something that makes you laugh

Nothing, really. I do get a smile at this dragon my mother got me, though:

I did another quest and got quite a bit more ambient dialogue from the party members! This is one of my favorite aspects of the game tbh, though it tragically wasn't Shadowheart and Lae'zel this time. But Gale decided his scholarly curiosity about approximately everything should encompass the githyanki.

So Larissa doesn't have enough friendship points approval from Gale to unlock much conversation on Day 1, and he's the only one who didn't have anything to say at the end of the day, but she asked him about himself to round out the set anyway. I did figure this might be one of his favorite activities, lol.

Gale:

[Let's see. I hail from Waterdeep, the City of Splendours. I'm a wizard of considerable acclaim, and scholar of exceptional accomplishment.]

[Gale: I have a cat, a library, and a weakness for a good glass of wine. And if the mood takes me, I'm known to try my hand at poetry.]

afd;kjadfkad;j

(I'm pretty sure that Larissa, trying to take all this in, is like "Oh! What's your area of stud—wait, you have a CAT?!" /visibly jealous)

(Also, in the f!Gale AU, I think she simply assumes from this conversation that Gaila is a great poet, too. Gaila is great at everything, obviously!)

That's about all he's willing to say despite approving of Larissa more than anyone else in the party, but I don't think it'll take long for more. :D In any case, I continue to love him with zero irony.

(Oh, another also: Waterdeep is one of my favorite locations in Faerûn, so I appreciate how much he loves his giant decadent hometown.)
