steinbecks responded to this post:

what would you say is your favorite fic you’ve ever written?

I replied:

Oh, thanks for asking! Hmm. I’ve written well over 200 (though most of that number are quite short), so it’s hard to say, and I’m never sure whether to go more with the “my best work IMO” sort of favorite or the “dear to my heart” kind. But, to cheat slightly, off the top of my head:

Favorite One-Shot: probably The Letters of Elizabeth Darcy, 1796-1798 (AO3). I had the idea and then I wrote the idea and what I wrote is what I meant to write. It’s not OMG MY BABY!!1! but it’s probably the fic that I’m most straightforwardly satisfied with.

Favorite Multi-Chaptered Fic (WIP): if we’re going with personal affection, it probably—despite everything—has got to be my f!Luke series, The Adventures of Lucy Skywalker (AO3), which began with Ten Facts About (Everyone Except) Lucy Skywalker (AO3), and is currently stuck 20 chapters and some months past ESB in The Jedi and the Sith Lord (AO3).

Favorite Multi-Chaptered Fic (Complete): relatedly, my f!Darcy/m!Elizabeth retelling of P&P, First Impressions. Very definitely my baby :D

Tagged: #the éowyn/f!faramir fic almost squeaked in (i am nothing if not predictable!!!) but very little surpasses the lucyverse for me

Uh.

I wrote ... the whole chapter.

I had planned to write a Mrs Gardiner POV, and ... did struggle through about two pages of it, but I missed Elizabeth's and was like ... eh, maybe I'll switch back.

I tried Elizabeth's this morning and promptly wrote over four pages of the next chapter. *\0/*

The Pemberley fic is chugging along:

Elizabeth dared a glance at him, which thankfully went unnoticed. Darcy had turned his head away, exposing little beyond a handsome profile. It seemed a softer one than heretofore—perhaps. At the moment, she felt sure of very little with him.

She would take the gesture for what it was, Elizabeth decided: a compliment of the highest order, from a man who had very little reason to offer one. The thought did not set her at ease; nothing could do that, in the circumstances. But it pleased both her rational mind and her vanity.

I keep trying to think of alternate titles for tolerably well acquainted, and there's just nothing coming to mind.

"Tolerably well acquainted" itself comes from Austen's description of Elizabeth's offscreen realization that she loves Darcy. The original story concept was that it'd be fun and interesting to put that development onscreen, so it seemed natural enough to name it after that moment, but ... meh.

I'm poring over P&P for the Pemberley fic, since the idea is expanding on moment by moment—that is, a line and a half in P&P can become two pages in the fic, or whatnot.

Anyway, there are a lot of little details I'd forgotten! It is a really involved description for Austen. But I think my favourite part is where Mr Gardiner and Darcy wander off to check out a plant. JRR Tolkien seal of approval!

It's flowing a lot better today. :)

I managed to write a page of fic, for the first time in ... awhile!

It's not ad astra, which I feel moderately guilty about, but it's something. A Darcy/Elizabeth thing! It's been so long that I was weirdly nervous about writing Austen fic, but I did make a little progress.

Mr and Mrs Gardiner, charmed by Pemberley House, were now all the more set on touring the grounds. She had not seen them for a good eleven years, since shortly before her marriage, and Mr Gardiner never had. He said with a laugh that he’d had little attention to spare for trees and streams just then.

Elizabeth forced a smile. She would have given anything to return instantly to the inn, finest woods in the country or not. She could not, however, bring herself to diminish her aunt’s and uncle’s pleasure. Accordingly, she replied to each of their inquiries, though she scarcely knew what she said, and looked wherever they did, though she saw nothing. She could think only of Darcy.

(I've been poring over P&P all day and ... feels good, feels right. :D)

I stole it from [personal profile] tree , because I want to feel accomplished despite having not written anything. (And also, I'm procrastinating on reading the second half of Mill on the Floss, which scarred me in my sensitive adolescence.)
